Out of interest, what's the view on repaired wares (such as a shattered lid stuck back together)?

it would be more wabi in the sense that a hagi chawan would develop a more even patina, with some slight concentration in some areas but not to extreme, just by the very nature of use through decades and even centuries of standard use in Cha-no-yu. the standard practice of chado in general prevents a build up of staining from happening in just one area, including the soaking cycles, wiping down with chakin, making tea, rinsing with hot water, rinsing with cold water, wiping down with fukin, general handling, ect...

Just another question. Tea wares like Chawan or Chaire are considered as non-perishable, if stored and handled with care, right? What about wooden items like Chashaku or Chasen; they are consireder perishable items? In case they are damaged by the everyday use, such as cracks in the wood or some small dent, they should be replaced or still used? What about lacquered items?

depending on the piece in question it's actually possible to elevate the value, but it has to have famous owners, famous makers, famous repair craftsman ect.... it definitely creates a sense of wabi if it is a well executed golden or silver repair, for personal items I would repair if ti was sentimental, or special in some way, though I would certainly weigh the price of the repair against replacing the item to be repaired.

I have some about 20 year old Bizen youhen finish pieces we use in the kitchen environment pretty regularly for serving, and they are really starting to take on a nice patina and the color is slowly changing and enriching the pieces more than they were when new.

A chawan under most circumstances is considered non perishable, except in the case of kinin (japanese royalty), then the chawan must be new and unused, and is typically only used once.

chasen, chakin, and hishaku should be new and unused for every tea gathering, though most people get away with a used hishaku, but the chasen and chakin really must be new, then they are never used again for an actual gathering. (on a side note their is a once yearly shinto gathering that you can take these type of used items to and have them "ritually destroyed" with fire, then their spirits go to the tea kami or something.)

originally chashaku were adopted from ivory chinese medicine scoops, around the time of Takeno Jo-o, bamboo became acceptable and who ever was hosting the gathering was expected to carve a new one for the specific gathering, though this quickly gave way to people treating them as art and an extension of the maker, and this is still the commonly held view amongst Urasenke practitioners. I have personally never seen a repaired chashaku, and lacquer ware can be repaired by a lacquer craftsman, though properly cared for can last for an extremely long time.

oh wow! Such a wealth of information, thanks very much for that! Especially your info on the soaking is very appreciated - I wanted to ask already, but didn't reallly expect such a detailled explanation - mine will always be soaked from now on.

Losing the twin to this cup made me realize that I never took the time to shoot the pair of them: I opened the package at work, and they were such a good fit that they didn’t ever make it home to meet the camera.



The lip of the cup is easy on my lips



and the base of the cup shows off the contrast between the coarse sand and the shino glaze

Woohooo after having a lovely day yesterday (receiving 2 chawan (1 raku and 1 hagi) and picking up a woodfired bowl at the postoffice), today wasn't any less great, received another whopping 3 bowls and a tea plate, and the ones you see below:)

I'm exquisitely positively exhilarated:D

Also I'm a total sucker for Seigan Yamane's work!:)

I've been watching those Seigan Ice Split pieces and don't recognize these--what was your source?

I'm still waiting for the right combination of glaze and size and shape--I think this glaze needs a larger canvas than I prefer, to really show off the drama of it. Your pair are gorgeous.
