Does Pu-Erh Help You Sleep?

by ethan » Oct 29th 16 5:02 am

I am drinking Pu some days & have found myself enjoying naps after a few rounds. My oldest brother came for a one-night visit & was drinking Pu w/ me just before he planned to depart. He decided to take a short nap first, which turned into a long nap that resulted in him changing his plans & staying another night.

So I ask, "Is pu-erh conducive to taking naps for any of you?"

Pretty much so. Some shengs literally knock me out after 1-2 cups, no matter what time of the day. Not too sure what to think of it though, I've got a job to do

Gushu teas do that to me, but not plantation stuff (go figure)!

The right tea can be very relaxing for me. Sometimes nap inducing! Usually aged teas or from older plants. That said, all tea tends to stimulate me on some level, like increased mental focus. So even teas that relax me initially can keep me up at night if I drink too much.

I drank a 2000 sheng pu at work yesterday and someone was laughing at me because I looked so mellow and relaxed. I like it that way, in the flow. Better than getting stoned at work, which never worked out well for me in my youth!

Each tea is different, some puerhs knock me right out, others just relax me, some give me lots of energy, and some just taste good but do nothing noticeable.

I keep a tea journal and make note of which teas relax me, knock me out, or stimulate me. Last thing I want is to drink a tea that sedates me when I'm trying to be productive or have a long drive, or vice versa and drink a highly stimulating tea in the evening before bedtime.

I think it depends on the levels of theanine and caffeine and each tea is different.

Here's a video worth watching, may explain some of the effects of Theanine on brain waves, and a little about how tea relaxes you. http://nutritionfacts.org/video/dietary ... lteration/

I've had similar experiences like the story about your brother sleeping over after a tea session. I've unintentionally put a few of my tea guests to sleep that way. I took some tea to a friends house who's wife just gave birth a month or so before, and she was in need of lots of sleep. After a few cups of quality sheng, she was out like a light.
