New guy here, drinking white peony as we speak *read*

by tlhfirelion » Jan 3rd, '11, 15:23

Just got my white tea sampler from Adagio today. Wasn't what I expected but that's not bad. I've never had loose leaf tea before and what I notice is that while there is ZERO fruity or aromatic taste/flavor/scents/etc., it is much more mellow that the garbage tea I've had in the past. There is no bite to it which is good.

I just started my second cup and it's good. I like it and it may be just the ticket to replace my starbucks habit. :) It may take time to develop a palate for this new type of drink (well new to me anyways).

I think I might do that but I want to drink the healthiest tea I can find, so I started with the white. So far the white tea is well, decent. I've now started my white needles tea and it's rather bland in my inexperienced opinion, but it's ok. I was rather surprised at the lack of color in the tea itself, is that normal for it to me rather clear?

Thanks!

Most white tea is pretty subtle, I'm drinking some bai mu dan at the moment which tends to have a little more bite than many whites I've tried but even this is pretty weak compared to most teas I drink.

It's quite a leap from Starbucks to white tea, glad you're appreciating it. It might be worth cranking up the flavour to some green, oolong or black tea.

I'm not so sure about white tea being the healthiest. Variety is good. I hear goji berries are the healthiest fruit but I'm not about to replace my fruit bowl with a bag of them. If you want high numbers of healthy things in a cup I think Japanese matcha or sencha would be hard to beat.

You could also try stepping it longer, using more leaf or upping the water temperature.

My general rule is to push the tea a little beyond what I find tolerable and then work back down. I pay little attention to vendor's brewing guidelines.
