Japanese oolong

by Ritva » Jul 29th, '09, 08:56

Yuuki-cha has just listed a Japanese oolong: http://www.yuuki-cha.com/Organic+Oolong ... Oolong+Tea
Interesting - I've never heard of a Japanese oolong before! They also sell Japanese black tea. I've been pleased with their offerings of organic sencha but I wonder if Japanese oolong and black tea are just curiosities.

Darn!! I didn't see the oolong, and I just placed an order 2 days ago!

I just re-ordered the Japanese Black - I think it is really outstanding. I have been having it quite often. It is very smooth and delicious, I highly recommend it!

Yuuki-cha's description makes it sound like a Hualien Fengmi-type tea (of which HouDe is my favorite). Does it taste like those Taiwan and Fujian(well, bad versions anyways) tea?

Having a cup of the kucha.
Round cup, honey carmel notes, bit like a ceylon, perhaps.

Oolongs from Japan are available from a local vendor here, I know beidao's tried one of them but I'm unsure what she thought of it.
Personally, I'm very curious about Yuuki'Cha's offering. I placed an order only last night with them but was apparently too tired n wired to notice any new stuff :(

The oolong was listed late yesterday afternoon (Finnish time), that's why you haven't seen it. I had been asking Dan about the arrival of this year's houjichas and he promised to list all the houjichas yesterday, so I was checking out the website a couple of times and noticed also the oolong. The "new" tag actually appeared later on, so no wonder you people missed it. I didn't order the oolong, only houjicha and san-nen bancha this time.

Actually having a cup this morning and wanted to say, not very Ceylon, more like Yunnan Gold. FTR, IMHO, etc.

I have had two Japanese oolong: A "Takeo Chagyo Longcha" and a "Hisiwaen Japanese Oolong". I liked both, they were not super-high-quality but they were nice enough teas and I enjoyed. Of course the price was a bit hig for a nice-but-not-super tea, due to the rarity of Japanese oolong compared to Chinese and Taiwanese ones. I do recommend Japanese oolong though!

I ordered the Yuuki-Cha and had it for the first time today. It's dark roasted and definitely leans towards black, with smaller chopped leaf pieces and more astringency than usual in an oolong. But the brew is decent with a Wuyi quality some darker oolong drinkers may enjoy.
A nice change of pace.
