Offer: Neti Clay pot

by Muadeeb » Apr 1st, '17, 08:29

My wife surprised me with a new teapot a while back, but I'm selling it since I haven't been able to find a tea that pairs well with it. She said it's Chinese origin, made from Neti clay, but it's not like any other clay I've seen before., so it must be very rare. She says they've been made since the '80s in various factories, but I can't confirm that it's Factory 1. Apparently, her family has been using this type of pot for years, and I didn't even know they were tea drinkers!

First thing to notice, it's a blue clay! Very thin walled, unique shape, about 180ml. The lid seal is not very good, but it does have a fast pour and comfortable grip. It does get very hot during the brewing process, so be careful.

I've tried it with greens and oolongs, but I think it's better suited for greens since boiling water makes the clay get a bit soft. It produces a brew with a very thick mouthfeel, much more viscous than I've ever had before. It imparts its own unique flavor, like camphor only stronger. It's not really the flavor profile I go for, but the aftertaste is really long- even an hour later the taste wouldn't go away.

Even though it was a gift from my wife, she says it's ok to sell it. In fact she said she can't even believe I tried using it all. Maybe she meant it was just decorative. I asked her if $50 would be a reasonable offer price and she thought I'd be lucky to get anything for it, so i'll make it $35 + shipping, comes with its own cardboard box.

I think the name on the side "eilMed" is a dead give away, probably means "oil med"

Looks like high-fired Muo Lu Ni to me, very unusual inscription but based on the uniformity of the characters I'd say was the work of a skilled potter, possibly master-level. Traditional gong-fu nose pots of this calibre only come along once in a blue moon, would you accept an offer of $3000?

I might be interested. Can you post some pics of the chop? It's not a ball filter, right?
