Hi Robert -- can you explain more about the subscription program?
I'd like to know more about that too.
Thanks.

Very interesting Chawan, Robert. Can you tell us about the piece including the glaze, etc? Thanks!
Thanks Chip....... This chawan was made using a traditional raku forming method in which a thick round patty of clay is put on a hand wheel and then gradually formed up into a bowl shape. It was then facetted on the outside and carved out on the inside to give it the requisite weight and balance. The glaze is a Tengu-yu....

Thanks for asking!

Best,
R

Thanks Chicago and Buzz,

How the program is structured is as follows. Subscribers prepay, at which ever level they choose, for 4 of my chawan, a fall, winter, spring, and summer chawan. Fall chawan may include such types of pieces such as Kohiki, Shino, and Nezumi/Kurojino, done in Mino or Ido form. Winter brings forth chawans tsutsugata, or cylindrical in shape with glazing done in darker tones such as Irobo or iron saturate blacks and deep browns. Spring would find chawans Mino or Ido in form, with glazes such as Kohiki, Shino, and Tengu-yu. Finally as summer approaches, the forms become more open in shape done perhaps in porcelain, with the glaze palate turning to cooler colors such as celadon and crackle clear.

There are 2 subscription levels. The chawan found at level 1 are pieces that are great entry level chawan, all of which come unboxed. The next level, include chawan, which many are of gallery quality, coming in signed and stamped kibako. In addition, as they emerge from the kiln, I will make a limited number of chawan available which are normally reserved for domestic/overseas gallery sales at a reduced price to subscribers at level 2. In general, subscribers to the program enjoy savings of 20-40% as compared to buying work one off. As I am not allowed to post subscription prices here, please contact me for further information.

Sales are handled in this manner. After the creation of the works, I will post photos on a site such as Flickr or Photobucket and then simultaneously notify all subscribers at a given level that work is now available for selection. All selections would be done on a first come first serve basis with the subscriber paying insurance and postage only while I will cover packaging time and expense. All payments are to be made through Paypal with subscribers at the level 1 paying in full at the time of enrollment, while those at level 2 are allowed to split the payments into 2 payments providing that they are made within 60 days of each other. While refunds are unavailable, I guarantee work as usual…… live with the chawan for 10 days and at that time you are not completely satisfied, you may exchange it for another. In this event, the subscriber pays return shipping and insurance.

Many thanks.

Best,
R

A couple of things from the last few months which are geared towards winter. A good black has been always difficult however I'm fairly please with this pinched piece....... The green is a new glaze which is pretty understated as well.

Thanks for your time.....

Best,
R

it is nice to see you can work in your studio after all the trouble in the house and to see these news works ! I like specially the first one, the light with a soft texture like a polished stone and with subtile nuances ..... great !

Life in the studio is slowly returning to normal with additional time spent on planning the May pottery tour to Japan. Info on my website:

Below is a coil built Tengu mizusashi which fortunately was treated kindly by the fire.

And well treated before it went before the fire.

It reminds me of a cave painting--a splendid combination of strong thin lines and diffuse blushes, and with that subtle three-dimensional surface too.
