Hi Everyone,
It's been a long time. I don't know if you have been following me (in a way) on etsy, but I have been busy all winter and I made hundreds of pieces including tea ware. I am currently planning on firing the 20th of April. I have two "cycles" of work show here on my storage shelves, drying. Each "tower full" is how much work fits in my electric kiln for one bisque firing. It takes two of these units full to fill my wood kiln.
I have a blog that I started in November of last year that you might enjoy. It's called splitfirepottery.blogspot.com. I'll keep you posted now that it's firing season again. We hope the kiln gods will be kind this firing, as I have a special group of pieces in there for someone special.

Hey Cory,
Give or take a few pots, this is about a kilns worth. I have another wood kiln full ready too. I've made about four "stacks worth" since the beginning of January. I'll keep making more through the year. I'll have about 40% of these needing refiring, maybe 40% "good" and about 18% real nice with perhaps 2% exceptional.
I am real happy that I have a lot of wood ready early this year. I'm firing in April and then doing a Wood-fire workshop in May here at the house. I'll be posting lots of pics on my blog.

I would say for what I'm after, my standards, my artistic view, I re-fire 'till the piece has what I view as artistic merit. Sometimes it needs more ash, needs to be moved closer to the front/fire = hotter, needs to be turned to expose a different side... that kind of thing. Some get refired and get worse or crack (not in a good wabi-sabi way) ... they go into my discard pile that is growing under the pine tree to the side of my kiln.

I feel that if something has my potters mark/name is on it and is going to be around for hundreds if not thousands of years, I want people after me to see my level of quality, what I view as an artistic statement.
I also think about the fact that the piece will be in someone hands many, many times. It will become a very intimate part of their life, hopefully bringing quiet joy to their life for that time that they are using it. I know I have my favorite pieces that I truely enjoy holding and look forward to using and looking at. I find almost every time I use something hand-made , I find something new I hadn't seen or felt before. For me, thats a nice little escape from the busy world around us. To get "lost" in the surface of a wood-fired piece of pottery.... works for me.
