RTD tea has 1/20 the antioxidants of a fresh cup

by bearsbearsbears » Aug 24th, '10, 19:18

Article today at the Washington Post highlights research on ready-to-drink brewed teas claiming to have lots of antioxidants/polyphenols/flavonoids actually have very little when compared to brewing a fresh cup at home:

Thought it was interesting and wanted to share!

And it seems they compared to teabag teas...which have less antioxidants than fresh loose leaf teas...though the difference is not quite as dramatic as between RTD´s and the tea bags...

Not that we're surprised, right?

Since the study is made in the context of product development, it'd be interesting to see if the names of the 49 observed products will be given. Wellgen Inc, quoted:

"While we believe that this research helps strengthen our own product offerings, we hope that it will encourage the use of rigorous analytical methods for the measurement and reporting of nutrients with health benefits."

Roughly it could be like: I have funded this bunch of scientists and they've found out (and I really had a good hint at that in the first place) that those 49 products are crap compared to real tea but now look at our new instant tea product which is much better. It's still not real tea (why would you drink that and mess around with leaves, hot water (dangerous!) and teapots ?) but much better than the 49 others.

Well, I guess it's business as usual !
