Help with identifying green tea

by seancho » May 8th, '18, 13:36

Greetings! Tea beginner, here. My sister visited China and brought back tea. I've really been enjoying it, but it's almost gone. I'd like to buy some more. but there are no identifying markings in English. Can anyone tell me what this tea is, and where I can buy it?

It's called Biluochun.
I am not familiar with it, but it sounds good!

Thank you atrix! Very helpful. Now I've learned a lot about Biluochun. Does the tin identify the brand, by any chance?

No idea on brand, but there are two types of Biluochun - the "Green Snail Spring" mentioned in that wiki, and the black version you may be drinking there. The shape is the same but they're two different teas from two different places if memory serves. I love this tea myself and the best ones I've found so far are from teaspring and Adagio (Adagio calls it Yunnan Noir).

I've had both, they're fairly comparable. Thought I'd give you a fall back if you can't find the brand.

Oh - and different but not too far different, is Adagio's "Black Dragon Pearl" tea.

There are definitely differences in flavour, but if you like Bi Luo Chun Hong, you may also like that one.

Sigh. I just noticed you said "Green tea." Discard all my posts... I SWEAR you said she brought black tea from China... never mind never mind... that explains why it's in such a nice tin. lol (Sorry about that.)

No worries. As I say, I'm a tea beginner. I don't know anything for sure about this tea. But I think it's green tea, based on color and flavor. Nice stuff. I've looked around on the net, and there's plenty of Biluochun out there, but I haven't found that tin yet. Guess I need someone who reads Chinese.

I checked the tin in your pic, and it doesn't mention a brand at all. Most likely is a generic tin. Small tea shops in China often offer their teas in generic tins that display the tea type, without their shop name on it.

Hi OP, just a clarification from a big biluochun fan (it was my first favorite green tea over 10 years ago!!) there are 2 different types of biluochun. One is grown in Zhejiang province and has a bit more of a fruity profile. Dong Ting biluochun is more expensive (it's the classic terroir for the "10 Famous Tea" biluochun). It's a bit more complex and even a little savory. Both are great teas, just a bit different from each other--some good online vendors sell both (Amazing Green Tea is one). Now is a great time of year to track some down, since it's really fresh!
