What tea do you drink when you are sick?

Culture, language, tangibles, intangibles from countries known for tea. China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, India, etc...

What tea do you drink when you are sick?

by teanovice78 » Oct 26th, '12, 22:31

I have gotten a flu lately and I was thinking of drinking some tea to warm me up. I tried some assam and it just wasn't agreeing with my stomach. The same thing happened with some yunnan that I normally really enjoy.(i usually drink black tea in the day time but it was just too much flavorwise) Then I tried some ripe puerh and it seems to be pretty tolerable. A friend sent me some great oolong; nice and sweet. That also was good for a sore throat.

So what do you drink when you get the winter/fall colds and flus? :)

I prefer minty teas when I'm having a cold or flu. Nothing fancy, any supermarket teabag mint tea is just fine for me.

Something strong, not too complex, not too expensive. I mostly just drink tea when I'm sick so that I don't get a caffeine withdrawal headache.

hongcha or heavily oxidized oolongs are good when I'm either in a tea rut or feeling sick.

If you have flu symptoms, try this concoction to help you feel better:

lemon juice + honey + hot water

or, if you have a really sore throat, try this, which certainly doesn't taste any good:

lemon juice + honey + vinegar + hot water

If you have an upset or sensitive stomach as well, shu pu seems to do it favors.

but since I can't usually taste or smell anything when I'm sick, I just drink something hot. If it has to be tea, then it will probably be something that I don't like all that much normally.

(135 mentioned spearmint, which is nice when sick. There are some commercial blends of spearmint and lemongrass - I think Tazo sells one - that work well)

Constant Comment. It is one of the few teas I can taste when I am sick. Sometimes I add lemon and/or honey to it.

Huge cups of everyday black teas, mostly Indian, with milk for me.

It's comfort more than remedy, and keeps me from getting too dehydrated.

Chamomile here, usually with lemon and honey.

Generic answer, but it works for me.

After recently discovering the purported benefits of aglaia odorata in combating coughs and colds in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), I'll be drinking liu'an with aglaia odorata. The tiny yellow buds are often added to liu'an here in Hong Kong.

past couple of times when I caught a virus and felt first signs of symptoms I immediately drink some young sheng brewed on lighter side same day, then go to bed early. (slight tickle or soreness in throat etc) Wake up, and its all gone. Seems like after that initial small battle my body is relatively immune for a while afterwards and I can still be around the people that got me sick/are still sick and not worry too much about it overwhelming me.

When I am full fledged miserable sick sick sick...fruit, most tea doesn't seem to want to go down, too overwhelming

Chinese green tea and oolong for whatever reason help knock out whatever I have and/or prevent it quickly.
