kettle question

by yalokinh » Mar 1st, '13, 02:39

Hey guys,
I bought a glass kettle not long aho, and it has a pretty good layer of scale on there. Does this make the water hard water?
Does the mineral deposit affect the taste too much?
I have a chaozhou teapot, will it affect the absorbtion of the tea into the clay?
I scrub off every now and again for looks. What do you guys think?

You can use some vinegar or citric acid to descale it if it bothers you. I think it's mostly a cosmetic issue (eventually, the scale may produce some little bits which will be visible in the brewed tea).

If your water is depositing enough to bother you, it is already too hard for light teas anyway.

personally I have always cleaned any scale from my glass kettle
(I do change water often with the glass, so deposits accumulate easily)

I do this because I fear the extra layer of scale increases the heat more, scared it will mess with the integrity of the glass somehow (since it does make some stranger noises both in my electric and glass kettle, Not so much in the clay one though). Could just be me being paranoid though

I agree about the noise thing.
I can taste a slight difference in the water with the scale compared to without. but i don't think its anything big, or great.
