Hi, this is a bit odd sounding i'm sure, but has anyone seen a french press like pot, but w/o the plunger for sale? I've seen them used here and there, but I've never seen them sold.
A better description of them would be if I were to take a 400-500 mL beaker, add a handle to the side, then took the lid of a french press and put the strainer at a fixed distance, about 1 inch down and put it there permanently. I've been trying to find one, but can't think of any good google search strings to try to find them.
I am sort of looking for the same thing. I want a French press of sorts but with a drop in brewing basket. I am not that familiar with the inside workings of the French presses, so I'm not sure if the whole apparatus can come out, leaving only the lid? If so then I'm sure I could find a strainer basket to fit.
A french press basically has two parts, it consists of the actual pot/cup/liquid holding vesse/whatever you want to call it and the lid/plunger assembly. The main cup/pot part is self explanatory, the plunger consists of a lid with a hole in the top of it through this hole is a rod which leads down to a mesh strainer. When you are ready for your french press to stop brewing you press down on the rod and it pushes the mesh strainer down pushing all of the tea/coffee/etc down to the bottom. The one that I have seen basically uses the lid to hold a mesh strainer just inside of the top of the lid. It's really hard to describe until someone sees it.

so yes, the lid with plunger comes off, and you are left with the glass pitcher.
but even if you remove the pluger from the lid - the lid will have a hole in it (from where the plunger goes thru)
you can find the french press even at tjmaxx, ross usually for cheaper or macys etc for more $.
as for baskets- coffee suppliers have them, even gold plated ones (swissgold) but the perforation is very small and water doesnt flow fast thru it. i havent seen any other kinds of baskets (you can check restaurant supply stores - maybe something can be found?)
coffee supplies also have these beaker like systems "chemex" also bodum has one, where the coffee is filtered in the beaker thru these "special" filters (they are not regular, in that they let thru oils and other "good stuff" from the coffee come thru the filter) i see chemex also has the beakers with handles.
thinking - you might also find some of these wide-mouth pitchers with handles at stores - if only a metal filter basket that fits could be sourced somewhere

That's almost exactly what i'm looking for. I have a feeling that it's made by the same company as that's the exact lid/top. The pitcher was the only part that was different. Instead of a rounded pitcher like that the one I saw was purely cylindrical.LavenderPekoe wrote:Something like this?

Wow, how did you find that? I have searched all over amazon, I thought. That one is cool, but a tad big for me.
ETA: Oooo!!! I <3 this one. http://tinyurl.com/ythy9u But it is a little smaller than I would like. (Yes, I am picky). I found a manufacturer site for them and they have a 600ml one, but you have to buy 3000. Anyone wanna go in with me.
