Quality Teaware Store in HK?

by Slop » Sep 13th, '18, 02:48

Hiya - I'm going to Hong Kong sometime this December and intend on purchasing my first quality set of teaware - a cast iron/yixing teapot being my main target. Do you lads have any suggestion as to where I should go to find said teaware?

Difficult, depends much on your knowledge. As anywhere the market is flooded with fakes and over prized and sometimes down-right toxic stuff. I would check the tradtional tea houses like Fok Ming Tong for starters.

Cast iron, better in Japan.

Taipei is just across the channel.

37+ flights per day, 1h 50m duration

I'd urge you to buy in there what you are after (including cast iron pots).

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies! I'm afraid I can't visit Taiwan as consequence of my very tight schedule and strict work periods. Though I've recently just gotten into Gong Fu brewing and intend on continuing my practice of it. Is the Gong Fu teaware marlet just as flooded with fakes and ludicrous prices as well? I've heard praises about LockCha teahouse and several others - are these safe bets?

A lot of fakes, yes. But also the real stuff. Tricky thing is that without experience it is unlikely to tell them apart. Be careful and do not overspend. Whatever you buy should be at least half of what you would pay in the West.

Or high-speed train to Guangzhou across the border. A couple of hours total for a trip to Fangcun Tea Market in Guangzhou. Stuff at every price point (most of the stuff you'll see for sale in HK was made in Mainland China).

if not everything... do not think there are teapots made in HK. Apart from the restaurant stainless steel variety perhaps.

Yep. You might be able to find some other imported teaware in the city (maybe some Japanese or Taiwanese teaware), but everything I've seen for sale in the city is made across the border.

I will also be in HK in December. Does anyone know which shops specialize in Japanese tea and possibly teaware as well? Also, are the tea gardens near the Po Lin Monastery worth a visit? Hopefully, I'll get back to Japan at some point and spend some time touring some of the tea farms.
