Info on Older Yixing? Qing or repro?

by tingjunkie » Feb 4th 17 9:10 am

Hello All! Got lucky and found what looks to be an older Yixing for a steal. Pots prior to the 1970's are not my forté, so I'm hoping some here might be able to provide some info. I've seen very similar pots as this that I believe are from the mid-late Qing. This doesn't look like a repro to me, but as I said, I'm out of my depth.

Also, if this is authentic and antique, what's up with the different color clay on the lid skirt? Is this from a slip clay applied to the outside of the pot, a byproduct of how it was fired, or something else?

Thanks!

I thought the same when i saw it. I have a very similar chazhou pot, not very good, adds a rather rough taste. I would guess 70's or 80's.

Shoot... thought I had unearthed treasure. That's ok, it was the price of a trip to Starbucks, so it will be a very inexpensive homework assignment. Always happy to keep learning. :D

It is a treasure if you like pre-20th century pots. I would say yes to Qing era chaozhou pot. Enjoy!

I've included a pre-daoguang seal, yours is somewhat identical, but I am no chaozhou expert... so my observation is merely a guess. This is a pre-daoguang chaozhou pot i once owned with a remade lid.

My new Chaozhou pot does amazingly well with Wuyicha--that's a very nice little pot. Have you tried it yet?

This is a 19th C Chao zhou teapot. I had come across quite a few of them. They were best made during the 18th C., but they were much more expensive.

yahoo japan? thats the usual trove for these pots as shantou pots in the earlier days were not as rampantly exported as yixing to the west.

They were never meant for the west. Originally, they were made to satisfy southern China's need for Yixing, when transportation was uneasy and cost of yixing was high (18th-19th C). Later on, they were sold to Thailand and other south Asian country for the same reason. I do have to admit that they are very good at absorbing taste of wet storage and firing.
