my second pot (show off)

by dizzo » Jun 21st, '17, 09:25

This is a JuLunZhu which I purchased with the understanding it is made of Zhuni, excavated from the Zhauzhuang mine site. Apparently from time to time, modern potters can get there hands on old stock of this clay. This one was made in 2014.
It is 100ml with an 8 second pour. I got this to pair with gaoshan and jade oolongs. It has been performing wonderfully so far!

If you are happy with it, we are happy. Is an 8-second pour average for a single-hole pot?

I have no single-hole pot (most of my teapots have this clay golf-ball filter), so I have no idea if it's an average time. But compared to my teapots, it's faster.

I'm jealous mostly because of the traditional shape!

Modern zhuni, aka hongni! Nice classic shape. Are the 'stains' from use or did it come like that?

Yes, I second Jay. It's likely HongNi clay, aka 'modern Zhuni'. I was told awhile back that real Zhuni in present day no longer exists. So don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise. There are exceptions of course in sourcing older pots, but it's highly doubtful even then. I too was wondering about the stains. Are they natural from use or did it arrive in this condition?

The stains are from previous use. Aged oolongs (e.g. DD from 1978) and some Gaoshan, to be more specific! :P

It did arrive in this condition.
Are we saying that this is not Zhauzhuang Zhuni?

I will be the first to admit that I am no expert in Yixing, just have read things around the forums over the years. I couldn't tell you one way or another what clay this is definitively.

I would suggest reading the following 5 part series on Zhuni by MarshalN for further clarification on this clay: http://www.marshaln.com/2009/04/friday-april-3-2009/

This notion that all modern zhuni is hongni (processed) seems a bit ludicrous to me. This is my personal opinion. But if the original zhuni existed apart from hongni, then modern hongni shall exist apart from modern zhuni. If we start separating clays by era or mountain, then the idea of "modern hongni" is just as meaningless.

It's as silly as saying qingshuini has been extinct since green label, since there has been no qingshui produced since then quite like the HLS of early-mid F1.

It is plausible that most modern "zhuni" labeled pots are in actuality hongni played and processed to look like zhuni, but so are many of the other modern clays altered to look a certain way. Authentic or knock-off? That will be the haunting question of all modern pot purchases. That much more incentive to buy older. But if a pot performs and looks beautiful in ones eyes, that trumps most all else.

It is indeed a nice pot. Lovely classic shape, good looking clay. Perfect pairing. Enjoy!
