Yixing Gaiwan Shop

by MengNing » Oct 4th, '17, 09:14

I am looking for traditional handmade Gaiwan‘s and hope you guys can refer a few websites or shops to me !

Most important for me is the quality even if it has a high price.

I would be happy about your answers.

Best regards

Hi Meng,

To my understanding, finding a high quality gaiwan made from good quality yixing clay is quite difficult. Again I may be wrong, but I don't think gaiwans were often made with clay. Generally speaking, 'traditional' gaiwans would be considered porcelain. You can get a decent quality porcelain gaiwan for a relatively small amount of money (compared to say a yixing pot). I do know that the odd lidded cup was made with yixing but again, finding a genuine article is not easy. I don't know of any websites that sell these. You can buy modern versions from say Yunnan Sourcing, but it will be with modern clay.

Hope this helps,

CC

+1. I am not a fan of yixing gaiwans. Yixing teapots are often much better in terms of clay quality.
