shopping for a gaiwan, please advise

by acorn54 » Jan 9th, '18, 05:30

hello
my name is guy and i am new to the asian way of tea seeping. i am taking this route because in my research rare oolongs are seeped most cost efficiently this way.
my question is, i put an order in for a clay gaiwan from "tao of tea". the clay is from the yixing locale of china. the purchase price is $35.
is anyone aware of whether this is a good choice, or should i look elsewhere?
thanks

https://vod.ebay.com/vod/FetchOrderDeta ... transid=as an addition i purchased this on ebay as i thought it might be good to have, being i am a novice and just starting out. is it a good pot? awfully cheap, yet it seemed to me it should have cost more to purchase a clay pot from yixing

I'd recommend a glazed gaiwan - especially porcelain. Won't cost much money (5-15$, depending on how chic it's supposed to be) and you can use it for everything.

yes thank you. i am looking into that, as i have reconsidered. i am looking for a internet site that will get it to my apt within a reasonable time, instead of the 2 weeks it takes from overseas. although chinatown in nyc is a 1/2 hour train ride from my apt, i'm not up to schlepping through the city.

You made the right choice. Get to know your tea and how you like it and then you can start thinking about clays etc. I personally wouldn’t get clay pots, especially Yixing, from 99% of eBay stores (I say this after having gotten some this way myself).

well my gaiwan came. 100 ml size. thought it was awfully small, but i am new to all this. weighed 6 grams of tea leaves to the 100 ml gaiwan. of course had to learn how to pour with it, but there are some good youtube videos on this. i must say i will be using this method, instead of the western style of brewing from now on. the characteristics of the tea leaves come out much more with brewing the gong fu way.
the typical american tea drinker is missing out on alot using tea bags and loose tea brewing the western way.
teachat site has been great informing me on the world of tea.
