My son boiled fish oil in my Breville electric kettle

As the title mentions, my young son thought it would be great to drop our omega 3 (fish oil!!) gel pills in the electric kettle (Breville 1.8L Variable Temperature Kettle BKE820XL. That's the one with 4 variable temperatures.). Now it smells like fish oil and water boiled in it too.

I have boiled 60% vinegar 40% water in it to no avail. I'm afraid of leaving soap residues if I scrub it. Would that work better?

Anyone has a "no smell, like new" recipe for something like that? My water still smells like fish oil and I've brewed more than 15 times water in it so far.

I don't have any kind of experience like that again, who would!?), but maybe that soaking some diluted javel (like, 90% water, 10% javel) could help?

it is oil!...

you need to wash it with detergent.... and then boil it with some salt water

Try getting some espresso machine detergent like Joe Glo or Cafiza and boil a strong solution of it in your kettle. These detergents are bleaching agents that break down to salt and water so they will kill almost any nasties including mold, break down oils and won't leave a residue in your tea/coffee wares.

Thank you so much for the input. Somehow (and I feel very stupid about it), it didn't occur to me that oil and soap should be arch enemies. I was so afraid of having residues! I only use filtered water in there, so I'm fussy that it remains pure in there (at least vinegar evaporates over time).

I'll try the soap, then to un-salt it as proposed first. Hopefully that will be enough.

Also, it's kind of my fault for putting the pills next to the kettle and thinking that those children-proof bottles could keep a 2 and a half year old from opening them. Sometimes I think children-proof items are harder for adults to use than kids!

Considering you've got fish oil residue, soap residue probably isn't going to be any worse! I look forward to hearing how it turns out as well.

Well... the soap didn't make the smell go away...

I hope Joe Glo or Cafiza is sold in grocery stores because I don't know any specialized stores for coffee products. Or else I'd be on CoffeeChat!

There is an inverse relationship between time spent trying to fix this, and cost of buying a new kettle. Don't kick yourself for going past the tipping point.

Try the juice of about 4 lemons + the lemons themselves and enough water to cover the lemons
boil that and leave it over night - repeat again if needed!

That's what I did to get some oil smell and residue out of my breville tea maker kettle (breville themselves recommended this method!) when a young cousin of mine tried making noodles in it with sesame oil

I got the lemons! I will try and see! Hopefully my tea won't taste like lemon... The rind contains oil too after all.
