My old trusty kettle is starting to fall apart.
I need a new one. I want a robust classy ride, something that can last a while.
What kettles are Tim using at the mandarins tearoom? They are quite the lookers! Expensive but heavy duty I assume.
And don't recommend me those awful looking bonavita kettles. They might be great for pouring, but it almost feels like cheating and I will never buy one because I think they are damn ugly.

I like the look of my Bonavita goosenecks. They're not ugly to everyone. But I will not recommend you buy one per your wishes.
I won't buy one without adjustable temperatures--so I can adjust to within 5 degrees of my target, not 2 or 3 presets only for 'green', 'oolong' and 'puerh'; how about you--do you want variable temps, or just a solid boil?
I love my Simplex kettle for straight boil and nothing more. It's beautiful and functional and very classy, but needs a stove.

My Kamjove lasted one season and then burnt out. I liked the teapot design which gave it a nice pour. It was pretty shoddy quality.
Went back to the Braun stainless (on second one) that M initially gifted me. It is a tank and has a remarkably good pour. Nothing to do with the Braun plastic kettles.
A nice tetsubin or glass kettle (or both!) are also good. Nothing like clay...sigh...

I feel fortunate to have a couple of Chen Ju Fang's zini kettles. I'm sure I'll eventually pick up a Lin's kettle

Are you looking for an electric kettle or keeping it old school?
I'm in the market for one too so I'll be following this topic
I'm leaning electric but having a hard time finding one with minimal plastic or rubber on the inside. Call me crazy, but I'd like very little, if any, plastic to come into contact with my boiling hot water.

I'm considering both options but let's say I'm mostly looking for an electric kettle. I would like to get a lin's as an alternative for when I really want to sit down and enjoy tea for a couple of hours.
Any other reliable european brands that sport that "chrome" look that kamjove and the other chinese kettle got?
As for ceramic kettles, I need to get one that can run on gas stove. Why do you like ceramic kettles? Is it really improving mouthfeel and softness of water?

The Lin's kettles will work fine on a gas stove.

When i've got my kettle (one of those offered by taiwan sourcing) i felt it made quite a difference comparing to the glass pot i used before.
Last night I've tested it side to side with my usual filtered water, but it was inconclusive. The reason might be that the kettle is now covered with a scale with the same mineral composition as the water i use. So today i tried it again, but this time with a low tds bottled water - the water from the ceramic kettle tasted smoother. So my conclusion is to use it with a good tasting water to build up the scale.
Aside of that the main benefits of ceramic would be
- the aesthetic, it's just a pleasure to use it,
- it hold heat quite well,
- it doesn't rust! i'm using it casually every day, in the morning and in the evening, simply leaving the rest of the water inside till the next use, then i discard it (in fact either i drink it, cook with it, or use it to water the plants) and refill it again.

I replaced a gooseneck bonivita with a cheap glass stove top kettle. To me the water tasted better, rather less changed, from the glass than the steel kettle. However, the pour from the glass pot is horrendous. I may use the bonivita again to see if I come to the same conclusion. I am eye balling the clay kettle from Taiwan Sourcing.

FYI: heads up to those in need of a workhorse kettle.
My favorite model of discontinued stainless steel kettle (Braun WK600) is up for sale on eBay.
They are made with a quality not easily found these days.
Despite the open lip look, it has a fabulous pour. I am on my second one. The first was passed on to me from Marshaln.
