Please help identify this black stuff inside the pot

by tonihihi » Apr 15th, '16, 06:06

Hi
There are some black stuff inside of the pot around the spout area and also some inside the spout as shown in the picture.
This is not tea stain. When I clean it, small black particles came out of it.
This pot is new. Anybody know what it is.

Sounds like silicon carbide used to prevent the lid from fusing to the body and for final finishing of the lid/teapot interface. I believe that's what a dealer told us a little while ago. Looks like a nice pot! It is a modern pot, correct?

I was the person with the pot that jayinhk referred too. The silicon carbide looked like sand baked onto the inside of the pot. The dealer of the pot explained what it was. This looks a bit different to me. This looks to me like stain. Old tea or water stain perhaps? Maybe from someone testing the pot? Try rinsing the pot with boiling water. Or gently abrade the inside with a toothbrush or a little baking soda paste followed by a rinse.

But I suppose it could be the silicon carbide. With my pot I used a toothbrush and very fine grit sandpaper to remove it. Was fairly easy.

On my pots with tea stains, the stains tend to be in the bottom of the pot, but possibly?

Good point.

I think as long as there are no strong moldy or chemical smells inside when you rinse with boiling water then just rub that stuff off and enjoy the new pot!
