1980 Tokoname Teapot Maker's Directory

by Ferg » Jul 15th 17 11:12 pm

All,

This is my first topic I've created. I had the good fortune to come across a Tokoname Teapot Maker's Directory published in 1980. I'd like to share it with the TC community. As I don't speak and cannot currently translate Japanese, I thought it'd be an interesting idea to post the full book here over time with the hope that members would be willing to help translate the text.

I plan on posting 1 new picture each day. If you're able to translate the text of a page, I'll post 2 pictures the following day. If you're able to translate the 2 pages, I'll post 4 the following day, etc. Otherwise, I'll just continue to post 1 a day. Hope this can motivate others also interested to read the text, see pictures of Tokoname and teapots, and identify potters (there are some really great, old pictures of potters often discussed here :D).

I appreciate your help and hope you enjoy the book as much as I do!

Cheers,
Ferg

I will start off posting through page 1 of the book to get the ball rolling...

Page 4. I realize the lighting on these pictures is pretty crap. I'll continue posting daily but will repost em all over again under better light conditions and aerial rather than angled. Bear with me in the meantime. Likely a weekend project.

Maybe I'll go two a day as if you're reading both pages with each flip. One page is much too slow. Do you agree? Anyone out there?

Ok, I will go with the two a day then! I can always count on you Victoria. :) Going to get close-up shots of smaller pictures within pictures too.

I believe William can speak it and would think he can read to some degree at least. Not sure if he'd up for the task. It's a lot to ask.

Hoping to get some translations on some of the pages at least, even if in time. Still fun to put them here in one place to share regardless.

The google translate app on mobile phones can also translate text from images. Of course it won't be perfect, but sometimes it's better than nothing...

Bef, thanks for the suggestion. Wish I could give it a go. However, I'm currently sporting the iPhone 4, pre-Siri, dating back to 2010. Tend to put my monies towards teawares.

After nearly 8 years of same phone, I'm holding off at this point for an iPhone 8. I will try it out upon arrival, but hope there are a few translations in the meantime.
