A weird sludge on Seigan Yamane's sansai tea bowl

by sugataishi » May 20th, '17, 00:44

Hi
I have bought this Seigan's work 3 months ago. It is sansai glaze. Soon the bowl got a weird sludge which is smooth in touch and hard to remove. A cloth does not help, I need to scratch it with nails. The color is rather grey.

Do you think it my come from a chemical reaction of glaze with tea?

Its highly unlikely its a chemical reaction from the glaze as these bowls tend to be high-fired. Maybe you could encircle what exactly you mean with 'smudge' and where/what part.

What kind of tea do you usually drink in it? I'd definitely suggest trying to rub it with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. They work on EVERYTHING

On the photo it looks kind of like tea stains. What do you drink in it?

While I've never used "magic eraser", it is my understanding that it is just a melamine foam, so no chemicals to be worried about (hopefully).

You can also use a bit of baking soda (with few drops of water to form paste), it works magic.

Neither would I! Magic erasers are just foam that you rub on the outside. They remove stains, that is all.

Just normal tea stains. Baking soda paste, as described elsewhere, is all you need. More diligent rinsing and wiping with a soft cloth after use will help prevent buildup; I only need to do the baking soda paste occasionally unless I'm using the same cup all day at work, where I don't have a sink handy for frequent rinses.
