Hi. I have recently purchased this set on ebay. I have cleaned and cooked teapot and cups as well. I am ok with teapot and will be happy for any info you can read from marks. What bothers me are cups. First if it is really about 100 years old then is the golden lining on the top potential lead risk? It is visible on water cooler. Second: I have cleaned cups with soda and cooked them as well but instead of getting clean cracks it somehow soaked under the glaze and browned it from inside. When i dried it overnight it partially dismissed. I am worried that i am drinking some heavy metals from the glaze and that golden rim on cups and water cooler makes me nervous. Any ideas/assurance/guidance ? Many thanks for your expertise

given that it's shipping from japan, i feel like it's somewhat trustworthy (i feel like 'fake' stuff is less common in japan than other places)...
i like the snake skin texture of the cups. resembles chigire (千切れ), but i don't think it's done the same way.

Thanks. I am confident that it is not modern thing.I have another banko teapot from this seller and consider him reliable. I would be curious to know if white glaze and gold on lip of cup can pose any risk. Eg if items from that era in white glaze were proven to have lead. if you have any doubt, again i'd just purchase a test kit. cheap and easy, and it's the only way to know for certain. if you read the FDA article i linked to, several things go into leachable lead potential beyond the type of glaze used like how it was fired and possible contamination from the kiln via lead vapor deposition.
