omg... TINS!

by Kai » Feb 13th, '06, 18:10

TINS!!!!!

Ok, a quickie review of my tins.

http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/arsenal.jpg
This is my Tea home at the moment. I've gotten a bit extra and have encroached on another cabinet space, but I've been informed by the Cmdr. Wife that it is only temporary. :|

A quick background. I like Tea and I like Tins. I don't know which I like more... yes it's weird and no I can't explain it. Anyway, because I'm not sure what I'll like (aside from that awesome local high-mountain green and sunflower jasmine tin) I've been going crazy with samples.
But I have been buying tins with which to store whatever teas I get. And of course there's the stuff that I've gotten locally.

On with the TEA!... er... tins.
Group Picture:

Here's some stuff I had found at a local asiamart.
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... mart00.jpg
1lb of Jasmine Tea! WOOT! And I dig the tin too.
It's actually decent stuff... a good generic jasmine. The tins also double-lidded to maintain freshness.

Some great green tea I got at the local bubble milk stand. http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/boba00.jpg
I do like green tea, but the fact that a cute asian girl was selling stuff sealed the deal for me. It's a great tea, but a crappy container. I decided to put it in a ceramic canister.

http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/target01.jpg
I found these on clearance at my local Target. I think they were about $4 or so. I totally lucked out on them. They have a seal and aren't impossible to open & close. These were the only 2 I found. If they had more, I would have bought them. I put the High-Mountain Green and the Gunpowder green that I had gotten locally in them.

Here's another group shot.
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... -group.jpg

My two Asiamart friends are there on the left
(L to R - background:)
-2 tins I inherited from a recently deceased co-worker :( Brand: "Hetley" Bought at BigLots, I think.
-2 tins I found at Marshall's (great place for cheap, yet awesome junk) Brand: Ahmad Tea. Decent tea actually, not as strong as Adagio's offerings, but that's a plus for me, because Adago's EB'fast and EGBravo are kinda strong for me.
-Adagio teabags in tin. It was originally for my mom-in-law... but I think I'm keeping it. :D
-Zhena's Gypsy White Cantaloupe. Another Marshall's Find. Decent, but fairly weak white, imo.
-A Candy tin I stole from my boss. It seals okay, but I decided to only put cheap stuff in there. Currently has some Lipton in it, I think.
-Stash Tea Canister. I love these. :( Double-lidded and in a nice color too.
-Unlabeled Republic of Tea canister. :D
(Center)
-An old Pier One tin a coworker gave me.
(Front L to R)
-Enjoying Tea dot com's sample
-Adagio's New and Old sample
-Another small tin I inherited from a recently passed co-worker (I wish I had known she was into Tea. Such a sweet lady)

ContainerStore
Quatro Stagioni Spice Jars:

Great container for spices. No frills, just glass and a lid.

Seamless Tins
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... erst01.jpg
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... erst03.jpg

I *really* don't like these things. I was hoping to use the smaller ones (1oz) to transport tea to work or whatever. The lids don't stay on well on these things. :( The only one that fits semi-snugly is the larger tin. :( If only these tins were screw top, (I think SpecialtyBottle.com has some)

Enjoying Tea
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/enjtea00.jpg
These are the ones I got from Enjoying Tea dot Com.
I really like that cheap green canister for some reason. It's double lidded and feels very nice. I think it's an excellent size and shape. I just am kinda put off by the labeling and advertisement on the face of the can. It's $2 on their website. Oh and you get a free one when you order... $20 worth of tea? I think?

The Green Tin Canister in the back is also from them. It's $2.50 on their site, but is also a bit larger. It's okay.. just a generic, decent sized green tin. It's like Adagio's sampler tin, just larger.

Special Teas
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... ctea00.jpg
This is the round tin from Special Teas dot com
SilverTin Round, 150g 3 X 6 IN. ($4.50)

http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollect ... ctea02.jpg
I'm including this close up pic in order to show the detail of the sealing lip. It's not a whole screwtop type canister. It's a 1/8th or so turn that latches into the tighter area. Yes it seals good, but I feel like I'm going to break it by turning PAST the stop, which I've already done a few times. They're good and decent... but for what I paid, I'd rather have the little green double-lidded ones instead.

And finally Stash
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/stash00.jpg
These are their smaller canister that they sell. I really like them, but they're too pricey in my opinion. (Only because of the shipping) They're also double-lidded, but they have a real nice finish and feel to them. Stash does have a special every once in a while where you buy a tea and get a tin for free. Might be worth it to some, if you know what kind of Stash Tea you like.

As a sidenote, I wanted to include this
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/bags01.jpg
http://kaiser.shackspace.com/TeaCollection/bags02.jpg

Special Teas also sells empty bags in varying sizes for teas. I might just end up using these to transport my favorite teas in. *shrug* They're of a really heavy plastic and seem great/designed just for this purpose. They come in two sizes and are pleated at the bottom. Like $.50 a piece.

Well, that's it for now. Looks like I made a Jing-Cha sized post! :D Hope you enjoyed it. Someday when I have more money I'll get some zensuke tins and review them.

Best for last

Nice post Kai.

The stash internet weekly loose leaf special is located here:
http://www.stashtea.com/w-specil.htm
Basically you buy some loose tea and they toss in a free tin.

I have also been looking for some smaller tins to use for transporting tea to work, adagio's sampler tins work great, but they come already filled.

Of corse not, but it starts a vicious cycle:
1. Have tea you want to take to work
2. Buy adagio sampler to try new tea and reuse tin when done
3. Like sampler and reorder in huge tin
4. Fill sampler from huge tin and take to work
5. Still have original tea and no sampler tin

Both you and Jing are trying to bankrupt me! ;p

Oh, and LadyArden, that Little Red tin was another one that I "inherited" from my co-worker that passed away. I have no idea where she got it.

Ok, here are my tins. I've only selected one of each kind in stead of disturbing you all with my whole collection...
My sample tins. The two adagio style, one from a sample pack I got at my local asian grocery, a short term air-tight jar, and a foil pack with a nifty little clip.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/58629197@N00/99893443/
My full size tins, along with assorted crap in the back ground. Notice the large carboy full of mead! Mmmm mead. Two tins I picked up at the dollar store, a 4 ounce adagio tin (i can't find my big one), a jar, and my brand spankin' new tin.

Here's a closer look at that nifty tin. Closed, and open:

It's full of some lower quality tikuanyin that i picked at my aisan grocer for 5 bucks. I like the tea too!
More big tins for your enjoyment.

and finaly, my less than air-tight cardboard boxes. Decorative, but not too functional for anything but puerh.

I'm looking all over for cheap tins (where I can get a bunch at the same time) but can't find them  I wish I could find like 10 tins for $10 or something... but NOOOO the canister gods hate me.

The "(Lid different than pictured)" in that page scares me a little. Has anyone actually ordered these?
