How to boost your humidity

One of the intentionally aged teas, Pu-Erh has a loyal following.

Anyone take the plunge, yet? I'm looking for a small humidifier myself.

We dont boost the humidity to store our good Pu Er teas in Guangzhou, since Guangzhou is hot and humid enough in all seasons, and have been regarded as the best place in China to store Pu Er tea. So we only need to keep our Pu Er teas in the dry place.

Since you boost the humidity to quicken the age process of your Pu Er tea, pls be careful that the tea/cakes are too humid, and they will become mouldy inside of the cakes; this happens a lot in the past several years in Guangzhou, when the aged Pu Er were crazy hot in China. :)

I've got about 15-25% humidity range in my storage area right now. Is there any hope of aging in that range?

Air flow is low, opening the door twice a day is about it. Humidity needs to be raised, but in a controlled way, I know. I'm looking for a decent ($50-150) electronic humidor, but they all seem to have very mixed reviews. Suggestions?

wow, 15-25% RH is really low, and I thought I had it bad with 40% natural RH. I don't know about electronic humidors, except I've hear some okay things about Hydra ones, I think. Depending on how large your collection is you might get by on just humidity beads, which are much cheaper, but it only works in a really small area, so you could only feasibly store 3 tongs plus some tuo stuck here or there. I'm fairly picky/particular about what I'm investing in, so I'm satisfied with a small storage space (for now), but there are people who buy everything in bulk...which means you probably should go electric.

Just bought a cheap humidifier. I was thinking 50% was a good level to shoot for?

RH% of 15-25 is virtually usless as I am sure you already know. I would really shy away from any electric type of humidification system in that unless you are on top of things, mold will develop and infect quite fast.

Got a cheap one, and it seems there's a lot of upkeep involved. I'll take a look and do some research on beads and see if that's a good alternative. The space is about 2x2x2ft.

beads will be your best bet for that kind of a space. I think a pound or two should do you nicely. I got mine from Heartfelt, and I think they're pretty reputable in the cigar collecting circles.

How much humidity do you really need to age puerh? Are you guys going for wet storage conditions?

Up to 65% is still considered "dry" storage. Wet storage is complex process requiring experiences and easily goes wrong. Unfortunately wet storage is not as simple as exposing the puerh to high humidity.

I was wondering because Kunming´s average humidity barely edges above 70 in the most humid months and it dips well below 50 in the dry months and tea ages just fine there...actually If I´m buying aged puerh I prefer it´s from Kunming.

Well, I got a pound of the Heartfelt beads (60%) and they seem to keep my small container at just below 60% consistently. I open it up and give it a few seconds to exchange air every few days. I may have to get more beads for the rest of the stash. Working pretty well, though. Only thing is I have to monitor it constantly.
