New to loose tea... About to make my first order

by Dresden » Apr 18th, '09, 23:07

Hey there guys and gals...

A little background. I have always been a fan of teas. Black, green, white, herbal etc. and I know that bags are inferior but until now it is all I have been exposed to. One problem is that I live in a rural area and loose tea is impossible to find. My two staples have been Lipton Pyramid Bags and Tazo Bags.

Well, I got tired of saying "Man... I'd really like to see how much better loose tea is." I finally decided to jump on the net and do some research. I landed on Adagio.

I am getting ready to place my first loose tea order and this is what I decided on... Tell me what you think, please.

White tea sampler
Green tea sampler
Black tea sampler
Oolong savant sampler

All of these will be brewed in a Bodum Yoyo that I was able to find at a local chain store. (If you have any experiences with one, good or bad, let me know)

Well, that's about it for now. I look forward to any comments or suggestions you may have as I have not placed the order yet.

Cheers,
Mike

I have a Bodum De Chine that I use at work and it works pretty well... although it's annoying having to explain to my coworkers every day what it's for and some people don't even know that tea exists outside of teabags.

You can't really go wrong with those samplers, especially if you don't know what exactly you're looking for. Either way you're in for a huge upgrade from lipton and tazo.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

Iannon, I actually have a morbid curiosity about the gunpowder with all the mixed reviews I've read  . That being said I definitely would like to try the gyokuro.

I have also added a sample of genmai cha to the order. Again, curiosity has gotten the better of me. :?

hey thats cool :) you should give the dens green tea sampler a try too. 3 bucks for like 3 or 4 loose leaf samples and a couple teabags that are actually pretty decent. I am actually drinking some fukamidori right now.

I found the Adagio samplers to be very helpful in exposing me to teas I'd never tried, and opening my eyes to the whole world of loose tea. I got every sampler kit they offer. The funny thing is, I came to Adagio drinking mostly flavored teas and sweet iced teas... and some of the first teas I tried from them, I didn't "get". But, as my palate matured, I was able to go back and try those teas again later, and they tasted entirely different. Now I drink primarily unflavored hot tea... quite the journey for me.

For example, when I got the black tea sampler, I brewed up every one of them... tried them with sugar, and they all sorta tasted the same... as did Darjeeling 22 and Oolong 40. I was like.. hmphhh, what's the big deal? After I learned some things here, I went back and did comparison tasting again... unsweetened and warm. That's when I started to learn to discern the flavor characteristics of each tea... and converted me to never sweetening my hot tea.

If you like green tea, I also recommend the Den's sampler, I have enjoyed it very much.

Welcome. :)

Sarah
***This organic blend is earthy & spicy, with a fragrant aroma & smooth flavor to captivate the senses. Naturally sweetened in the Kentucky sunshine & infused with natural energy. Equally delicious when served piping hot or crisply chilled.***

Well... It seems my order will change again.

I was already considering a kyusu from Den's but I didn't know about their green sampler. So, I have decided on the following.

White tea sampler
Black tea sampler
Oolong savant sampler

I have replaced the green tea sampler with a green tea starter kit so that I can have the ingenuitea for work.

From Den's I will supplement with the green tea sampler and a kyusu.

Let the journey begin..... :)
“Take some more tea,” the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.
“I’ve had nothing yet,” Alice replied in an offended tone: “so I ca’n’t take more.”
“You mean you ca’n’t take less,” said the Hatter: “it’s very easy to take more than nothing.”
