Anime anyone?
I'm not a huge fan, as I think it may take over my life like a bad case of WoW, but we can't talk Japanese film without it. FLCL really knocked my socks off and I would it recommend it to anyone new to anime or to anyone who has hasn't really paid attention to it for a while, if you're impatient click to about 3.30 in the link to get to the first bit of action.
Studio Ghibli films should be as much a staple diet for a young child as Disney is, unfortunate I don't have a Playhouse Ghibli channel in the house but I try to do my best.
For classic Japanese cinema Kurosawa's Rashomon has always been my go to movie and it still pains me when I see western movies hailed as the most original thing since sliced bread when they amount to little more than copies. Toshirō Mifune is an actor of such skill he should be up there with De Niro, Pacino, Hopkins, Brando and the rest.
I have a shelf of anime - I used it when I was learning the language (which is very, very difficult, since the English translations have all be localised) and it just settled into my viewing habits. It's fun sometimes to watch an episode of Last Exile or Haibane-Renmei.
I'm working through Chobits now, and Gilgamesh. There's just so much to watch...

although i haven't watched anything that's come out from Japan for the past 8 months or so, i have a rather large collection of anime. if you like action anime i'd have to suggest Black Lagoon. it should be coming out soon dubbed (maybe it already is o.O?), but the sub really kicked serious butt.Proinsias wrote:Anime anyone?
lately the J and K dramas have beaten out Anime for what i mostly watch.
speaking of k-dramas.... i was watching Gourmet (ep 15 if anyone is interested) and tea-infused pickled cucumbers were made, this sounds like a delicious idea! has anyone tried these? The tea plantation that they shot at was also very pretty.

I used to be a pretty hardcore anime fan, until about a year, year and a half ago. I just found myself not having enough time to watch, nor cared to sift through the deteriorating quality of what was being put out at the time. Nowdays I think i'm just going to wait to see what gets filtered into us licensing and watch some of that.
Yes, Japanese and other Asian movies have some real gems among them!
I'd recommend The Last Life in the Universe (japanese-thai) and Korean director Kim Ki-Duk's movies. Also just got this Okubirito movie, looks promising.
But then again I like arthouse films which, honestly, are quite weird.
And chrl43, Taste of Tea was awesome

I still cannot get the Tokyo Drifter music out of my head.
It's kind of intriguing that in Japanese art there is such a mix of myth or story from so many different sources - sometimes seemingly without regard for conflicting values in the myths or sources in the first place. I just love watching a Samurai film and hearing Western style music, for example. Or music that would fit a Kojak episode. I find this willingness to mix fascinating - and in some ways troubling if I feel the sources conflict or meaning is lost in favor of image.

I love Japanese films, though I'm speaking mostly of anime as I haven't watched too many live-actions.
One of my most favorite feature films is "Tokyo Godfathers," if you haven't seen it I highly suggest it. I also love "Project A-Ko" for it's humor. "Princess Mononoke" is a good one too if only for the depth and detailed animation. There are several others though none are coming to mind at the moment.
Also, "Tampopo" or something like that, it's a live-action that I've read good things about. It's suppose to be about a woman who gets divorced and runs a noodle shop or something. I got it but haven't gotten around to watching it yet but looks like it might good.
Then of course I love the regular anime shows as well. Sailor Moon is classic in my book as is Tenchi (Up to Universe with Tokyo being iffy).
