So I have a confession to make ...
Growing up, I loathed tea.
My name is Megs, and I'm a 29-year-old freelance journalist and designer (with a day job at a bank) living in Phoenix, Arizona. I'm originally from Alabama and those of y'all from the Deep South know about the great love for extremely sweetened orange pekoe tea. We had that growing up and I couldn't stand it. It got to the point where my mother wondered if I'd been swapped at birth. The concoction was way too sweet for me, and I didn't know there was any other way to drink it.
Then I went to university and took Japanese. My sensei introduced the class to green and barley teas. I found that I loved barley tea (aka mugicha) and slightly cooled green tea. So, I started expanding my palette, poking around at other types of tea. I finally took the leap a months ago into loose-leaf teas and I haven't looked back. Now I love tea, even more so than I enjoyed coffee. I love how tea makes me feel. I'm more alert and aware of my surroundings, something that coffee didn't do for me. I don't feel quite as heavy, so to speak. I love how I can drink as much tea as I want and not really have to count calories. I love the different varieties, etc.
In non-tea business, I am looking to go to graduate school in the fall of 2010 - hopefully to pursue a M.A. in museology. I'm a biblophile and love video games, technology, and history. I'm a member of the SCA and work in illumination and the fiber arts. I am also engaged to a wonderful Scouser and am the mommy of three cats. It's really nice to be here!
Oh, and I still hate orange pekoe tea. ^_~

I hear you about the sweet iced tea in the south. I am not from the south but have lived in TN for the past 10 years. I can drink a glass of it if it isnt like syrup but no more. I found that drinking more then that actually made my stomach ache! I normally go for unsweet iced tea if im out at a restaurant or something. At home its mostly japanese and chinese greens with some green oolongs in there
I prefer my iced tea w/o sugar too.

Hello from Mississippi!
Howdy! Welcome
I know what you mean about the sweet tea ordeal. My whole family stares at me like I'm naked when I refuse to have a glass of it
Everyone thinks something is wrong with me hahahaha. Its sooooooo unhealthy to drink the tea here; one cup of sugar per cup of water pratically! Then they still have sugar packets ready at the table. Only so much can dissolve...hahaha
ps- video games are gnarly!

Welcome
My mom's side of the family is from the south and she made the sweet tea all the time as I was growing up. I very slowly weaned myself off by the time I was 8 or so- I've noticed that I've not gotten as many strange looks as I used to when I order unsweeten tea down there- maybe the times are a-changin'..
I go for the Japanese greens and I hear you about the alert feelings
