Some small teapots for black and green tea?

by ngower » May 26th, '09, 14:32

I'd like to get a small Yixing pot for brewing black and dark teas, and would like a kyusu of some kind for my lighter whites and greens. I don't want to break the bank as I've already had my eyes on some for a while, but need something small and relatively cheap (at least not breaking the bank) to get me by as I take care of other responsibilities.

I'd say somewhere around $50 a pot at most is all I'm really looking to spend, ideally much lower than that if I can.

For a cheap, sturdy kyusu, check out the ones at Den's that are $19 (Kokoro, Yutori, Shincha). Den's even has one for $8.95, but I don't know how it compares in quality to the $19 ones.

I'm considering buying that crackled blue ceramic kyusu from Den, exactly what I'm looking for to get me by until I can afford a nice one.

I do like the Yuuki one quite a bit, seems like very high quality for the price.

The Artistic Nippon one is gorgeous, but quite pricey considering I could just dish in about $30-$50 more and get a more or less full-time kyusu.

Any personal insight to any of those recommended so far, and any recommendations for some yixings for my black tea?

[EDIT] Purchased the blue kyusu from Den, as well as a teascoop. I'm not expecting the highest of quality, but as long as it doesn't taint the taste of my tea and can get me through for a month or two, it should be fine.

Looking forward to more recommendations, comments, insight, etc from you guys.

Had to chime in! I own two kyusus from Den's. I own the cheaper $10 and the black-blue one. The black one pours well, does what it needs to do, and it won't break the bank. The cheaper is alright, BUT it's super slippery when wet! While rinsing it out I almost dropped it. Small issue, but other than that it pours nicely.

I don't own yixings yet, but I"m saving some money for Chen's. I think she's selling some for about $50 and I hear great things about them from others who've bought them. Little beauties too!

Good luck finding the pots!

EDIT: Didn't see your edit! Well, let us know how it goes

I post them from Photobucket. You can open a free Photobucket account and upload the photos to that account. Copy the IMG link that accompanies your photo and paste it in your post here. The photo remains at Photobucket, but magically looks like it is here.

It's not a bad idea to resize the photo (either in your own software or in Photobucket) to no more that 600 pixels in the longest dimension, otherwise people using Internet Explorer get some minor but irritating image size problems. You can also upload the photo to photobucket and copy and paste a "Direct Link" here; the photo won't appear in TeaChat, but the link will take people to it.

You can paste a small (600 px) photo in here and link to a larger image (if you have both in photobucket) or a different image or a slide show by filling your Direct Links into the following formula in a TeaChat post:

hope that helps
note* you dont have to use photobucket you could use flickr, imageshack, tinypic etc

Louis, it's great to see another Chinese person taking part in our forum. Welcome.

If you care to, I would certainly enjoy learning a bit about you and your tea preferences. You can post a short "hello" in the Introduction to TeaChat forum located here: http://www.teachat.com/viewforum.php?f=24

Please let me or Ebtoulson know if you need any more help with posting photos.

i think if you dont pursuit high technology, you can buy a good clay teapot in $30-$50.

i think yixing teapot has its good "Permeability" to protect the tea fresh.

I got it today and brewed an Organic Buddha's Eyebrow from Andao Tea. I didn't put enough tea in it would seem as it took about 5 minutes for a very pale liquor, but the teapot itself is just what I was looking for. Unlike my 600ml pot I've been using, this one takes 2-3 steeps to use up all my hot water before I have to put on more.

It's certainly going to do me some service I would imagine in the following months. A matcha bowl and a pot for black's are on my list net, looking to spend the same price range. My birthday/Christmas to myself will be much nicer pots, but thank you guys for the recommendations :D

Im on the verge on getting a kyusu, and being a leftie im wondering if I should look for one for that hand.
The thing is that for some tasks my right hand works just fine, im using my right hand for the (pc) mouse, holding a cup, eating with knife and fork.
Playing drums I can do equally good (not that great though) with either hand :)
Other stuff like writing and playing soccer and other physical stuff im definatly a left hander.
