Same kyusu for different kinds of Japanese greens?

by PuerhlyAwesome » Jun 26th, '09, 02:15

Good morning!

I'm relatively new to Japanese greens in general, I've only just begun exploring Senchas of different grades which I brew in a Tokoname Kyusu which is about 300ml.

I've also ordered other kinds such as Gyokuru, Kukicha, Genmaicha & Houjicha.

And so my question is, since I have no idea what these various teas taste like firsthand.. would it be safe to brew some of these in the same kyusu i use for my sencha? and if so, which ones? Or should I just use a glass/ceramic/glazed pot for testing/tasting purposes and eventually dedicate a pot to the type that I like?

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I wouldn't brew houjicha and genmaicha in the kyuusu in which I brew sencha. Gyokuro and sencha should be OK in the same kyuusu, although a smaller kyuusu is better for gyokuro.

Aren't some Kyusu glazed and some not? Surely it would be fine to brew all types of Japanese Tea in a glazed pot?

There's an old houhin up for auction on Swedish eBay that's unglazed on the outside and blue-and-white glazed on the inside, including the lid. Quite an interesting piece.

I'm not allowed to post links yet, though. =)

True, true.

I'm no connoisseur of Japanese teaware so I can't verify any claims made by the seller(probably antique, Imari-yaki), I just liked the look of this pot.

+1

And if the kukicha is not roasted (brown), it too could likely be brewed in the same kyusu.

If it is glazed, you may be able to get away with even brewing roasted types, but I just do not do it. I prefer to use a seperate vessel for the roasted types of Japanese teas.

Very interesting houjin, certainly appears to be older.

How much feedback does this seller have?

Go ahead and post the link if you want to.

OK, here's the link;

http://www.tradera.com/-Gammal-mkt-ovan ... n_94453426

In Swedish, unfortunately.

$1 is approx. SEK8 so, at the time I'm writing this it's around $63 if I'm not totally mistaken.

Seller seems to have a good reputation.

Does Reservationspris ej uppnått mean that the reserve price is higher?

@olivierco: Yes, that's right.

I see also that the seller will only ship to Sweden(or rather, only accepts bidders from here) but what do you know, a really polite e-mail might change her mind ^^

Interetsing piece, looks old, would be nice if I could read the writing under the lid though -- too small.

It has been said somewhere here that deep-steamed teas do not do well in a pot with a bubble filter screen. Do the wrap around stainless screens work? The ones with the screen that covers the bottom? What works best?
