Camellia flower cake?

I find myself drawn towards this 2004 Rongzhen Camellia Flower cake. I find the existence of flowers on the cake to be interesting. The outgoing side of me wants to try it, but I have also heard to stay away from cakes that contain the camellia flowers as I guess it's an indication of poor quality. I want to get other people's thoughts on this sort of cake. I can't post links yet, but I get most of my puerh from a certain popular website that everyone here has probably used.

It has been my (limited) experience that tea flowers do not age well. I was given a small bag of recently dried tea flowers and had a couple of cups. It was very light and fragrant, and I wanted to save some for later. After about a month, they just tasted old, and no longer fragrant.

Perhaps pressing the flowers into a cake may help to preserve them a bit. I have never even seen a tea flower cake or a cake which contained tea flowers, so I can't give an opinion remotely approaching athoritative.

Ah, well with that being said- I bet the flowers only serve a decorative purpose. I may avoid this cake.

However, if it is a good cake to begin with the flowers probably wouldn't hurt it. And it does look cool. I think it is really nice when they make a cake, then take one large flower and press it flat right in the middle of the top.

Normally, tea flowers are kept loose or pressed into cakes. I think it's quite rare to mix them with tea leaves.

i have the pu erh tea cake you are talking about. i enjoy it. nearly finished. as you are getting deeper or towards the middle of this cake, you will find more pollen seeds dispersed throughout the cake. some flower buds can be found too. there is a subtle hint of the camellia flower's taste in the final brew but mostly you can taste the pu erh tea. i was a happy tea drinker.

Not really. Not if you know what you're looking at. After all it's just flowers.

The taste is quite distinct and as Xuancheng said "very light and fragrant".

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea though!

Indeed, perhaps we westerners just aren't familiar with them because they're probably just too delicate to successfully export.

I don't think they're that delicate to ship, and you can buy them, generally pretty inexpensively. YSLLC sells cakes for ~ $10 IIRC.

I personally think they're pretty nice tasting for what they are.

You can mix some in with the brewed tea. I think bears3x wrote about that a while back.
