Shincha Awards 2009: Details & Suggestions

by bcos » Jun 30th, '09, 01:53

So we've all had a few months and a lot of different shinchas, but I think we should take the time to recognize some of the shinchas that rocked our collective world this season. I'm pretty sure everyone understands the general concept, so I'll dive into some of the details I jotted down.

Categories:
I tried to keep the categories broad so that there would be more competition instead of a clear cut winner. The names are kinda bland, so post any ideas you might have to spice some of these categories up! Also, please feel free to add any additional ideas about new categories. Here's the ones I've come up with so far:
Best New Shincha
Best Organic Shincha
Best Value
Retailer of the Year
Shincha of the Year

Nomination Process Ideas:
The final voting field for each category would include 3 options, so in order to obtain the finalists, everyone should have a say. You'd be allowed to nominate up to 2 nominees per category. The top three nominees with the most nominations in each category would then become finalists and voted on in a poll to determine the winner. To nominate finalists, we can start a new nomination thread when the time comes. After the voting, the finalists will be announced and a poll would be placed at a time and place to be specified.

Comments/Questions/Suggestions:

I just drafted up the rules and everything relatively quickly and I'm sure I forgot something, so if you have anything to add to this discussion, please just leave it here on this thread :) There's a lot of room to grow and play with this idea, so any suggestions are appreciated.

We'll see how this works out in actuality, hopefully we can draft a system that will work well.

Interesting idea, but traditionally Shincha runs til the end of July I understand. There are many shincha I have not yet tried that I likely will sometime in July or maybe even a little later. I would suggest waiting til Shincha is officially over, IMHO.

Voting is based on the limited tastings of individuals which is not even across the board. Some members have tried 1, some will have tried 20 possibly. So a person's vote, etc will have the same weight despite how many tried?

Two very valid concerns. I think what I'm going to do is make this into the comments/suggestions thread so that the details can be worked out. Then, by the time that things are worked out, the end of shincha season will be approaching.

Sounds like a plan!

Perhaps you want to copy and save your OP, otherwise responders will reply to the OP.

I am waiting for a shincha order right now, so it is a bit early for this.

Changed the OP so now this thread will serve as a suggestions thread. I was a bit eager with this idea and jumped the gun, I will admit

So in terms of dates to start the nominations, does the last few days in July sound good?

I can't see any harm in rating the shincha we've tried so far and then adding or editing later? Anyway, I like your categories, bcos! Great idea. :)

You can surely add your reviews to the all inclusive "AS YOU DRINK 'EM" SHINCHA REVIEW 2009 topic. We should not neglect that topic which is becoming a bit of an annual tradition.

But a rating/ranking/award process should come at the end, IMHO, not in the midst. And after everyone has had the opp to try as many as they are going to try.

Shincha of the Year
I havent sampled enough to say for this year, but last year my vote would be:
Ito En Shizuoka Superior Shincha 2008... followed by Ito En Kagoshima Superior...

i liked O-Cha's Yutaka Midori as well.

Something you might want to consider is a weighted voting methodology. I.e. based on the number of shincha / shincha for that category / previous year's shincha / previous year's shincha for that category your vote would count for more or less than say another person's vote who has less exposure. Not quite a truly democratic system, but probably an aim at a better result.

Then there is vendor bias to consider as well. I don't think it's going to be possible to get a 100% accurate result in any case.

The only "fair" way to do it is based on volume. Just tally who got what and from where and the most purchased tea and vendor location win. This is in no way based on taste, but there is no other "fair" way to do it. The next closest way as mentioned above would be to give your ratings weight based on how many you have tried. This will probably just make a few people responsible for the winners but will come from those with the broadest sampling. I'm not saying either of these are good ideas, but just my 2 cents.
