I recently broke into an old stash of matcha to do some baking, and my housemates have latched onto it with a fury. (Can you blame 'em? Matcha's tasty and my baking is awesome.) Unfortunately, I am now out of matcha and my housemates demand another sacrifice.
Anyone know of a good, cheap source for food grade matcha?
Re: Cheap Matcha?
I had some good results with Hibiki-an (80g for 27$).

Re: Cheap Matcha?
I probably wouldn't spend that much on matcha for baking. Den's carries a couple of restaurant grade options, which I assume is the same as food grade.
Re: Cheap Matcha?
The Liquid Jade matcha from Tao of Tea is a pretty reasonable offering. It's not exactly something I would drink though.
Re: Cheap Matcha?
Mmm...the Den's restaurant is about the size and price I was hoping for. Down at Sunrise (an Asian grocery) in Eugene, they carry matcha...but the bulk 1 pound bag of restaurant stuff is nearly $50. I was sure it could be found for less. Thanks!
Re: Cheap Matcha?
Padre buys large bags of Organic Yame Matcha from Yuuki Cha and is pleased with the results. I have tried the small tin size and it is good.
They have a cheaper food grade available.

I suggest sacrificing your housemates

Re: Cheap Matcha?
Hah! I tried that, but it was counterproductive. I'm the acting membership coordinator this summer, and its so hard to recruit new housemates when you know you're just going to eat their hearts later.

Re: Cheap Matcha?
I thought being able to recruit new minions would be a good thing? Moar sacrifice= moar living space.
Re: Cheap Matcha?
Yeah, but in order to recruit them, you kinda have to think of them as real people. And that makes the whole heart thing a touch difficult to stomach later. We're evil, but we aren't quite dead inside.

Then you aren't doing it right.

Re: Cheap Matcha?
In all seriousness, I think that if it were me I would be suggesting to them that if they want matcha then they need to pay for it (if not just buy it). I wouldn't be surprised if there was some place locally that you could buy it down there, but if nothing else you could always give them a link or two.
