You might want to do the first boil of your ceramic kettle on a range top and transfer it for the rest of your session. The initial boil can take as long as 20 minutes with a large kettle on a hot plate. I recommend this particular one, though.
If you decide to transfer it to the table after the initial boil, you can also use an alcohol burner with adjustable wick to control the temperature. These are much more attractive and I use one when I can ensure proper circulation. Denatured alcohol is sort of nasty stuff.
