On a similar note, I was at the HK Intl Tea Fair just last week. Great atmosphere and hopefully more such fairs to come in HK.

a friend of mine who sells tea and who just came back from china and hong kong said that prices for pu erh tea cakes have gone up.

This sounds very very bad. Seems like they are aiming for a Tea monopoly, thus holding the market and raising the prices.

I don't think its that bad, prices of recent years have gone up due to inflation and partly due to demand (which is now solved with increased supply).
Other than that, its normal for sheng pu to increase in price every year depending on merchants. Having said that, one will still stumble across some good deals off and on.
