MATCHAS!!!

it has probably been done but i couldnt find anything using the search engine.

my question is, what would be your best ''budget'' matcha and your best ''quality'' matcha.

I only had kiri no mori and im now looking to buy some new matcha to experiment a bit more. I have a chawan on its way, got myself a nice matcha tea spoon too. And have a ''budget'' chasen, so i should be good to go.

I would chose Horaido`s Miyako-no-shiro HG, it is koicha for 2100 Yen, that is the best priced and koicha and it tasted really good, better than some higher priced koichas, it is intensive and sweet, so give it a try.

Does Horaido ship other than via EMS?

I would say Ippodo Wakamatsu-no-mukashi (1500Y for 20g). As Ippodo only ships via EMS, you should order about 6-7 items to minimize the shipping costs, which is easy to do considering Ippodo's broad lineup.

budget matcha for drinking?

If I'm going to drink it, I won't skimp. There is nothing horrible than a cup of astringent green goop.

That said, I only use budget matchas for baking. Baking grades breaks down to two types: nonsugared and sugared. Nonsugared, I like my company's Shiki Matcha as well as Uji no Tsuyu's Hagoromo matcha because it's really cheap and I won't feel guilty when I use a whole can for a batch of shortbread cookies. Sugared, I like Rishi's Sweet Matcha to sprinkle on top of ice cream, or use as finishing sugar for cupcakes.

As for drinking grades, I like The Green Teaist's Houou for drinking - good price, and very good flavorwise (they also have outstanding gyokuros). But I like my company's the best because of its easy accessiblity for me :P

just my two cents :o

My bad, I thought budget = less than 15.
If that's the case, there's wayyyy too many out there in that price range, I don't like to step out of my comfort zone when I've already found something that I enjoy. Hence the reason why I stick to my company's stuff :P
