(Looking for) My first Teapot.

by Mr Wigster » Sep 27th, '09, 15:13

I'm looking to buy my "first" teapot, I currently have a few different infusers and things, here is what I have so far:

-Bodum Shin Cha Glass teapot
-Adagio IngenuiTEA

I drink only green tea, and I very much like the idea of having a tea pot that really "absorbs" the flavour, so with many uses becomes more adapted.

What type of pot would you lot suggest, I'm looking in the £20-£30 range, but may go up to £40 if it really takes my fancy.

I live in Cardiff, Wales [UK]. And we have no local tea ware shops :( So would have to be available online.

Also, if anyone could tell me "all" (probably impossible) the names of the different pots, that would be great.. so far I know yixing and gaiwan?

P.s I mainly prefer these styles of pot, though i'm sorry I don't know what their names/styles are:

Side handle style: Image

Simple lustre, clay style: Image

Basically, just throw all the teapot information you have at me :D.

Thanks, Wiggy.

The side handled pot is a type of "Kyusu" (sometimes spelled Kyuusu) found mostly from Japan. Though Kyusu means teapot, it is most often associated with the side handled version. Any decent one will have an screen built right into the pot for ease of brewing.

This happens to be my fave style and though they were made for greens, other teas can be brewed in them as well. Most are made of either unglazed or glazed clay from Tokoname, but there are also porcelain versions available as well as Banko and Bizen clays.

There are more and more sources for them online. which I am sure others will add ...

Mr. wigster,

Since you are in Wales, try to look up a friend of mine, Phil Rogers and look at his work. You won't be sorry.

Thanks JBaymore, I'll look into that.

Anymore suggestions of where I could shop for teapots online, as I said before the idea of "baking" in the tea flavour into the pot very much appeals to me.

Can't believe I'm going to admit this, but my first teapot was from Bed Bath and Beyond.
It's from their Everyday White collection and I still use it for English style brewing. It was/is a good learning teapot, and at 9.99USD you don't need to cry over dropping it. I'd recommend that before spending a lot on a zisha/yixing teapot.

Blood Bath and Beyond, Yay!

Mr. Wigster, you say you only drink greens, why did you decide on that "style." Seems that would mute the greens. I know not all would agree, but almost anything would be better for greens that a Yixing type post.

Porcelain, glass, kyusu ... even the B B & B, all better for greens IMHO.

Oh really? well as I said, I have no clue about tea pots, I based my choice mainly on aesthetics, but now you've said that'll certainly rethink it.

The Kyusu style was my second choice, so would that definitely be good for green?

Kyusu is my pot of choice for greens, if I could only choose one, but keep in mind I drink a lot of Japanese greens. But for several years I brewed virtually everything but blacks in my first kyusu with very positive results.

I often go with a more neutral porcelain pot for Chinese greens, or a gaiwan, also porcelain.
