Yutaka Midori would fit into the marine flavor I think. Also some Gyokuro. Hibiki-an's Sencha Karigane (Kukicha) reminds me of a tropical sea breeze.

Just finishing Sencha Premier, no marine here, but some floral this time around. Each time I brew this I pick up something different even though I measure virtually everything when brewing.

As I said yesterday, for me fishy = marine = yuck (we need a pttffftttt smilie-face).
I also am not fond of smokey...a hint is good (depending on my mood) but too much makes me feel like I'm sucking a toasted wood chip. The other one I checked today is umami...not too sure what flavor this word really describes, but if it means "meaty" (as in having a flavor of meat) I don't want that in my tea. If it means "meaty" (as in hefty, rich and thick) then I do enjoy that.

This is interesting...last years YM was my first sencha and has been my favorite so far. I would have described it as grassy with a citrus (i.e. fruity) finish. I never found any fish in my cup . Maybe when I next brew up some of this year's YM, I'll look for that hint of sea breeze.

Today so far..Black Spiral at breakfast. My tea buddy brewed up some Mate Vana from Teavana (this really is a great hot beverage for a cold rainy day). This afternoon I'm thinking that I might just have to have some YM (but I might not actually have any, so it'll probably be fuka supreme).

I'll stop typing now, lest I bump into tomorrow's topic!!

Marine is a hard to one to wrap one's taste buds and vocab around. I somehow sense it is part of the umami, and the umami is part of the marine.

I like to think of it this way, think of the ocean smell minus the fishy smell, all the fresh goodness that is left is marine. I think marine in green tea is actually 90% influenced by aroma.

And yeah, "hold the fish, please!"

Fukamushi Supreme from O-Cha has me a pleasantly buzzed right now. And really delish!

I agree, they go hand in hand (or at least with greens)

Also I don't think of Umami as "meaty". Meat is a another ballgame. Some meats can have umami. the best description Ive heard is "savory".

I do not like earthy or smokey flavors in my teas. I've tried teas with both flavors and just could not enjoy them. The smokiness reminded me too much of smoked salmon and barbecue which I love in food, but not in beverages. The earthy flavors remind me of too much compost and the farm fields to be enjoyable.

Currently in my cup is Castleton FTGFOP, second flush, from the Lochan Teas tasting group package. Absolutely phenomenal.

FLORAL, definitely.
Some oolongs taste like a funeral.
I can't stand the floral smell/taste.
It's thick and sickening - in my opinion, of course.

Perversely, I actually like the wodui smell of shu pu erh lol
