Back to tea - actually after drinking sencha for most of the late summer and now switching back to Oriental Beauty and Wuyi yancha, I think I do find that the Japanese green teas (sencha, gyokuro), in addition to having an energizing effect from the caffeine also have a calming/centering effect (theanine impact?) while the oolongs seem to have just the effect from the caffeine.
Anyone else?
Re: Gyokuro Magic?
I find this thread interesting; I've never experienced this with Gyokuro...I haven't tried a Gyokuro I really liked, maybe I just need to try a good one? They always seem to have an unpleasant vegetal aroma and I don't like the umami taste in them.
I do experience similar feelings with other teas, including some of the greener high-grown oolongs and a good lighter Darjeeling.

Theanine is the real deal! This is what Wiki says: "Theanine has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress, and improves cognition and mood in a synergistic manner with caffeine"
That's exactly what I've been experiencing. Although I can get it in pill form, it's so much more enjoyable from gyo!
Wow so on top off all the other benefits of greens theres the theanine too!
Tea is kinda like a "superfood" it's got soo many benefits.

Both are quite good....and yes I do feel this calming effect. Its almost like being very excited with caffeine along with have total control over my excitement. Does that make sense/clareandromeda wrote:I have a gyokuro problem. Frankly, it is all I want to drink. I splurged at Ito En recently and bought the Yame and Uji and have been drinking it most days. I have noticed that on the days that I drink it i feel calmer and happier. Drinking gyo feels like a form of meditation.
I'm on medications for depression and anxiety, and I'm beginning to think that gyo should be prescribed! It calms me better than the pills I take when I have anxiety attacks! How amazing is that!
Anyone else experience this magic with gyo or other teas?

Perhaps a little Sencha Magic as well?
I've only had limited experience with Gyokuro, But I've been drinking 4 to 5 six-ounce cups of Sencha for the past year now. At first, I would feel this bright, overall good feeling you are speaking of, and then I would become a little drowsy feeling afterwards. I pushed it to the extreme, drinking 10 cups over the course of a day to get that same effect. These days, I don't feel anything from the Sencha due to my body becoming so used to it. Now i'm addicted to the stuff. Go figure.
