Yixing And Sencha

by Tead Off » Nov 10th, '09, 01:33

Recently, I was able to get an older Yixing teapot out of my storage which I used to use extensively for Long Qing. The pot is a sandy zhuni mix, not particularly thin or high fired for that nice ring, but, very well suited for green tea. So, I decided to test out whether a yixing teapot can make a good cup of sencha as some people here think it cannot.

I pulled out a bag of Hibiki-an Premium Sencha. Preheated the teapot (yes, also contrary to some people's opinion of 'correct' procedure), warmed the bowl and began brewing the tea. Wow. That 1st cup made me sit up and say, hmm good. I enjoyed it very much.

I think I can safely say now that using a yixing pot with Japanese greens poses no problems. I won't say it is better than Banko kyusu but there is no disappointment here and those who already have a good yixing pot should not hesitate using with sencha.

Way to break the mold. I really like that tea table. Looks like a moat protecting your tea ware. Not a bad idea to keep out bandits.

I had a tea seller in Beijing bring it to me earlier this year on his trip to Thailand. I haven't seen any others like this. It's my daily one.

Yeah, the mold needs breaking. Too many illusions floating around in those teapots.

 ROTFL

Eh, brew however you want, does not bother me. I won't be breaking out a Yixing for sencha however.

I call it Bangkokyaki. It is made here in Thailand, hand formed and woodfired. They are wonderful as they show the color of the tea and feel good in the hands.

Ed- haha. talk to Hojo and tell him it's a myth!

Can you post a close-up photo showing surface features of your previously green-tea conditioned yixing pot?

It's a sandy red clay mix (zhuni?, Hongni?) I bought 20 years ago. 100ml or so.
