Where to find unique ceramic tea cups

by jumpin jester » Dec 5th, '09, 16:06

Hello!

Recently I became very interested in brewing in a gaiwan, which led me to start thinking about what would be the best serving vessel for this gaiwan made tea. Regular ceramic teacups seem to be the norm for gaiwan brewing and from what I've seen and in my opinion are the most attractive cups. The problem is, I can't find many that I like. The problem especially begins where I've seen many cups that I would LOVE to own, but they weren't for sale, so I know they're out there!

Where can you find a variety of attractive ceramic cups? Some of the cooler ones I found were on the Hou de website, where they were just showing what the infused tea looked like and not actually selling the cup. Most places selling ceramic tea cups don't have much of a selection and if they do not a great one....so I'm not really sure what to do...

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

you might want to try funalliance. They have a large selection of neat and interesting cups, ranging from half ounce to several ounces in size.

I suggest checking out Etsy. I don't think I can post a link but you should be able to find the site. I just purchased a handmade tea cup and it's a perfect fit for my newfound love of pu'erh. There are quite a few artists with lots of quality stuff on the site.

The internet is not the only source for such stuff. I would guess there is a fine craft gallery somewhere relatively near you. Stop in and have a look around. You might find that there is a potter's guild (or something like that) in your state that has a directory of its member's studios.

And so on.

best,

Jingteashop has numerous high quality jingdezhen teacups. For high quality hand painted jingdezhen gaiwans or serving pitchers, chinese kungfu tea art is worth checking.

Tell us what you like, and then we can narrow it down further. For example -- what styles? Decoration?

Thanks for the input everyone, I'll have to sift through those sites and see what I can come up with.

I'm not very well versed in teaware, but from what I understand I'm looking for fairly basic teacups 75 ml or so. Typically white. I really like ones that are simple and created in the Zen sense, where the empty parts make up the piece as much as the objects. Like I mentioned in the original post, I really like the tea cups at Hou De Asian Art & Fine Tea, but not the ones they are selling; I like the ones that they have pictures of tea brewed in.

Maybe you can email them and see if they'll sell the cups, or at the very least tell you where they got it from.

Yeah, I should have mentioned this in my last post but I am actually waiting on an e-mail I sent to them about this.

I made this thread in the meantime because I didn't think that one tea website would have all the cups of a certain style on the internet, but who knows, it may be true :?
