Tea Throughout the Day

by jdwilliams » Dec 10th, '09, 01:58

Hello,
I wanted to get feedback on what types of tea are good for different times of the day. I would like to start drinking more tea, about 5 cups a day.

Morning
Early Afternoon
Afternoon
Late Afternoon
Evening

My thinking is, although it is all personal preference, Black is good for the morning and early afternoon, Light and Green is great for the afternoon and Herbal is perfect for the evening.

But what specific teas do you like throughout the day?

Thanks,
JDW

Welcome to the forum.

This is purely subjective. I used to think I had to have black every morning and did just that for years. I also used to drink 4-5 teas a day.

Now I tend to drink predominantly greens throughout the day. I enjoy the greens the most, enjoy the focus of one type of tea. I also feel my health has improved since I switched to greens all day long ... mostly Japanese greens.

I also drink less teas, usually 3ish, but have 5 or so steeps per tea, so I am drinking tea thoroughout the day.

In the evening I switch to teas like mugicha, genmaicha, kukicha which are either caffeine free or low caffeine.

I think people often drink black tea in the morning to help fight that morning sluggishness that many have. The 'tang' or boldness of blacks, plus the higher caffeine, i guess is suitable to help awaken your senses or something like that. My guess is that it probably isn't the healthiest choice though.

I practically jump out of bed each morning so I don't need none of that. Usually in the morning I drink something that will help calm me or slow down my perception of time like a good japanese green or a slow paced kungfu session of some more complex oolong. For the early afternoon-late afternoon, at least on weekdays, I go for a flexible oolong or chinese green that can be steeped for hours while I am at work.

Like chip said purely subjective. Also depends on what you have to do each day and at what time (plus rhythms/speed of your body waking up). I drink more according to situation then time of day. Everyones pace of life is different.

For blacks I usually pair it with some kind of food, like different chocolates and rich indulgent foods (ice gream and a good keemun is great). Take few bites, sip, few bites, sip etc etc. Nice mix. If I had to attach a time then I would say late afternoon, or desert time after dinner, or the late night hunger I have sometimes.

If caffeine affects you then of course your selection is more limited for evening drinking like you said herbal. (also consider houjis and genmais as a very good night time tea). I just pass out a couple mins after I close my eyes so its no problem for me to drink blacks (even though I would consider this to likely be unhealthy/unproductive for a deep night sleep to intake that much caffeine right before bed).
