Question about the IngenuiTEA

by jester » Jan 12th, '10, 15:38

I'm fairly new to tea and have bought a small glass teapot with a infuser basket from a local store for a few bucks. The problem is that it is a pain to wash because the tea leaves get stuck in the infuser. Also because of the way the infuser and tea pot is shaped I have to make at least 2 cups at once, so I'm looking at the IngenuiTEA. I'll be using it at work and don't have a dishwasher here, so I was wondering if just rinsing it out with some soap would suffice. I understand that part of it will stain, but I don't really mind. Another thing is that we have one of those instant hot water dispensers (the one with the black circular top that you turn). Is it safe to pour that water directly into the IngenuiTEA? I ask because the IngenuiTEA is plastic and don't want it melting/deforming.

Also, does anyone know where I can find a mug with a flat bottom? I have a Mr. Coffee mug warmer but supposedly it works better with a mug that has a flat bottom because it's essentially a hot plate and more contact would be better at keeping the tea warm.

Thanks for your input!

The IngenuiTEA has been perfect for me at work. I've had no problem cleaning it out by hand (I've never put mine in the dishwasher), and I've had no problem pouring boiling water in it, I've even put it in the microwave with room temp water and heated water that way. It's not difficult to clean, it's one of my best tea-related purchases EVER!

As for mugs.. I unfortunately can't think of any. If I do, I'll be sure to repost!

You can definitely run it through the dishwasher, and certain dishwasher soaps even bleach out the filter to its original white.

Adagio's glass mug has a flat bottom. But do you really have a problem with you mug going cold?

Is there no way to put a metal mesh infuser basket in the glass pot?

IngenuiTEA is fantastic for a beginner and an advanced tea maker (well for some things ;)). the only bad thing is that you have to wash the tea leaves out, as you'll find it a pain to try to throw out the leaves that all get stuck to the grate thing. A pain yes, but a necessary evil for some great tea :)

My IngenuiTEA works great, but since I make several cups a day with it I tend to just wash it out with hot water and soap between uses. A run through the dishwasher when it starts getting stained, and everything's all cleaned up and good to go.

I'd prefer ceramic mugs to glass mugs. I don't really want to put a glass mug on the warmer. What generally happens, is that I start drinking my mug of tea and then get distracted by work and my tea gets cold. That's why I bought the mug warmer. I can't post links (<30 days), but if you google "Mr. Coffee MWBLK Mug Warmer" it's the first one that comes up on amazon.

My glass pot does have a mesh infuser basket, but it is a pain to clean. Tea leaves get stuck in the joints and because of the low quality construction (and cost) the inside of the mesh basket has a sharp metal edge. I once tried to get a tea leaf that was stuck and ended up cutting my finger. Besides that, the pot works perfectly though. Depending on the tea I usually do 2 to 3 brews.

I just also found another one. It's made by Finum called "Tea Control" (again, can't post a link, just google it). Has anyone tried that? Maybe I should make a separate topic for it. It seems cool because you can stop the brewing at any time, but depending on the shape, I might still have the problem of having to brew more than one cup at a time.

Yes, I have several Finum, that is what I was going to suggest.
They are great. Also the Bodum Yoyo.

Thanks for the info. I looked up the Bodum Yoyo but didn't like the look. The Finum (.8 liter) is about $30 on amazon and it makes 1-4 cups, but it looks like if I only wanted to make 1 cup, the leaves wouldn't have much room to expand. Which is one of the the problems I have with my current tea pot. Since you have one, how much space is there between the infuser basket and the bottom of the pot? Also what is the approximate diameter of the infuser?

How would you rate the Finum Tea control vs the IngenuiTea? The Finum retains heat better, but the IngenuiTea has a lot more room for the tea leaves to expand. The IngenuiTea comes with samples of teas and is about $10 cheaper ($20).

I guess if the Finum retains heat well (about an hour as it claims), I would make more than one cup at a time.

I just can't decide.

It's hard to beat the IngenuiTea deal with the samples. I think we have had a total breakdown in communication - sorry. I have Finum filters but not the pot.

I love my IngenuiTea so much I'm about to buy the larger version also. That way I can leave the regular one at work.

As for cleaning, it's a breeze! If I do have a rogue leaf that gets stuck in the mesh it doesn't matter because the screen is easily popped out. Replacement screens are sold for $3 if it gets too stained (a problem I have not had). Add the samples all for $19 you really cant go wrong.

Where did you get the Finum filters from? I'm looking for their tea control filter but am having a hard time finding a place that sells just the filter.

I recommend this one, you can also find them on Amazon.

35 reviews and a 5 star rating:

I actually use the large size for pots and/or mugs. The filter fits most mugs and cup even in the Large size. If you are drinking oolongs you need a big size. Finer blacks and greens - use the smaller sizes.
