Teacup question!

by steanze » Feb 16th, '10, 23:18

I have been thinking about getting a new teacup, probably a dongdao celadon teacup :), and I have a question that I hope some of you with a greater experience with tea can help me to address.
I have a 150 ml yixing pot and I will be getting a 150 ml gaiwan, therefore I was thinking that it would be comfortable to have a cup that can hold 150ml. This way I could entirely empty the brewing vessel I use without passing through a chahai. Though, I see that most celadon cups hold less than 150ml. Would you recommend the use of a celadon cup as large as 150ml? Or would you rather suggest to get a smaller cup and a chahai?

One option that I was considering was getting a celadon gaiwan that I can use as cup, but for some reason it does not feel like a very elegant solution to me... though I am a newbie so I don't trust too much my judgements about what is elegant and what is not.

Thanks a lot for your help!

My favorite teacups hold about 60mL, so while I am always on the lookout for slightly larger cups that I like as much, I use a fair cup or leave even my 75mL gaiwans partly filled each infusion. Works ok for me. Don't know from elegant, but with the addition of a bamboo tea tray, I worry less about drips and spills with all the transfer between vessels.

You probably should consider a japanese teacup. Yunomi-cups are quite large. Also these cups are of very exotic design. Check some hagi yunomis at magokorodo store on ebay. (I must only add that it's not celadon, so I don't know if it's good for you).

To build on the above comment, Japanese yunomi (and Japanese-style yunomi) come in a vast array of shapes, surface treatments, and price points. If you search, hard to not find one that suits your tastes in teaware.

best,

Here's my two cents.
With my Chinese tea ware I have both large and small cups. I use the large cup when alone and small cups when I have guests. I very rarely use a chahai.

That is a good point.
I already have some small porcelain cups for when I drink with friends, so now the bigger one for when I am alone is needed...
Using a chahai I would risk to make the tea colder, or I would have to warm up the chahai every time I brew (quite often, since I am using a 150ml pot).

Japanese teacup is a good idea :D
When I use a 110-120ml teapot, a Japanese teacup that is 120ml to the rim works well, because 120ml teapot will yield much less than 120ml tea water.
Or you can always match your 150ml teapot with the 150ml cup of your gaiwan :D
