Growing "golden flowers" on tea bricks is a long time favored tradition. I am not interested in growing it at home. But if it's from a known source, like this one, I wouldn't mind drinking it. :D
Fungus and blooms are 2 very different thing. One is toxic and the other is very desireable in puerh and cigar:

I thought they were not always different. Some (although not all) "blooms" are the golden flower (also sometimes casually called "yellow mould" by people), which is a fungus favored by many brick tea drinkers.

All these talks about molds and fungus got me scrutinizing my stash. Oh no! my regular drinking cake has specks of yellow on it, looks really yellow when I illuminated it with a LED torch. Is this why I am feeling lousy these days? These are mainly in the inside of the cake and not the outer surface. Anyway, this cake is now under quarantine, broke off a piece to be confirmed on my next visit to a reputable tea vendor. How lucky, visited the tea shop last night and a visiting "expert" was present. The LED torch and sample went round the tea table ... final opinion! very drinkable indeed, these are golden flowers :D Well, we did not drink this pu as the expert shared a 1970's XG Iron Beeng .. that's another story.

This is a 1998 Yiwu cake, spend half its life in HongKong and then in Malaysia and marketed by a local chained store tea vendor. Here the pictures :-

To me, the blooms are mostly tiny sparkles, but mold is much more irregular in shape and color.

I'm no expert on Puerh, but I believe Golden Flower on Heicha and fungus on Puerh are 2 different things too.

Let me add some info on Golden Flower I've found out, (one of sources http://blog.cctv.com/html/60/826060-741044.html)

Golden Flower is called Eurotium cristatum
Image

Is a microbe known to world just 30 years ago and found on no other food but on Heicha, by doing research on Eurotium cristatum some scientists expect nobel prize (believe or not)

According to research by Hunan Agricultural University, with test including HIgh Throughout Screening done on Fuzhuan Brick, it's said to be proven it assists in lowering blood pressure, losing weight and haulting diabetes, 'specially active on PPARy and PPARs which are used to cure diabetes disease.

..sounds like discovery of new medicinal microbe according to those articles..
