Menghai 7542 2009 batch 901

by steanze » Apr 13th, '10, 20:29

Hi!
I was planning to get 7 cakes of Menghai 7542 batch 901 from Dragon Tea House. I had their Menghai 8542 of 2005 and I like it, plus I read that 7542 is a standard in the world of puerh. The 2009 is quite cheap now and getting a fair amount seems like a good way to make sure that some of it will be around long enough to age.

Does anyone have particular suggestions? This would be my first purchase of more than one cake at a time and I am sure that many of you who have much more experience might have helpful comments :)

Thanks!

Have you tried their 7542-901? I would recommend at least sampling it before purchasing so many. It is very different from the 2005 8542.

Thanks for the suggestion! I am not sure whether Dragon Tea House gives samples, I will ask Gordon.

I've already bought a tong (i.e. 7 cakes). Here are some photos I took of the Dayi 2009 7542 901.

I would not recommend that you buy a tong of anything until you have tried a cake and like it. Even trying a 10 gram sample or visiting a teamaster to try the tea may not be enough to decide whether the acquisition of a tong is justified. In addition, the market is not running out of this particular cake so there is no rush to load up on stock.

The answer to your question also depends on your intention:
(a) for immediate self consumption
(b) for consumption 10 to 20 years from now
(c) for investment purposes i.e. you intend to sell them
(d) to show off to your friends, visitors
(e) because you like Dayi tea
(f) all of the above
(g) none of the above

Sampling is always a good idea, however in this case you are pretty safe. This is a great recipe and even if you dont like it, you could easily get rid of it. Or even hold it for 20 years and watch the price go wild. I have 4, and would love to get my hands on a tong.
