Hohin for gyokuro

by davidv7 » Mar 29th, '10, 05:50

Hello to all teachatters.
I recently acquired a 240 ml (8 fl.oz.) Kyusu and I am enjoying it for black, green tea and sencha.
I am now contemplating to try Gyokuro (and this is a good excuse to buy a hohin :)) - i read that a one person ammount of gyokuro is less than 100 ml (3 1/3 oz.)
Now the question!
where can I find online o relible source of Hohins? I Would like a Bizen one if it is possible.
I know the Tokoname catalog, Artistic Nippon and Zencha where there are some but not Bizen.
Does anyone has ecperience in Bizen pottery online?
Thanx
David

AN has a bizen hohin and yuzamashi set for sale. Bizen is often expensive. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, I suggest you look at Petr Novak's page in the Artisan area and look at his link to his work. He makes some very good hohin.

You can find Bankoyaki hohin which are also very good albeit different from Bizen or Petr's woodfired look. Yuuki-Cha may have some.

ebay is the best source for houhins. They are sometimes sold as "green tea tools" or "sencha tea tools".

You can even find the matching yusamashi

or a whole set like this one

Hello.
Thank You - I saw the Bizen pair at AN but at 358 USD is a little over my budget :)
I am now looking the Kashun Hagi on AN, and yes I am looking on ebay too - however I am not able to tell the volume of the ebay ones.
But Bizen is very rare.

Thanks now I roughly know the siz to volume ratio.
And now the cups!
I`ve seen cups on sale from 20ml to 100 ml for Gyokuro.
I want to know for You Gyokuro drinkers out there which size is tthe most apropriate?
Or is it just a tea cost issue.

I like houjin to be around 3 ounces (really hold 3 ounces), but have some larger and smaller (one is 1.5 ounces ... tiny!). 3 ounces is my preferred amount to brew when it comes to Gyokuro, Precious Dew.

Preferred cup size seems to be two of the cups fill the houjin, basically. So when coolong water and pouring it always works out and it is one less thing to have to think about ... so it depends on the houjin. Many houjin/cup sets seem to follow this, but not all.

Thanks again to You all for the responses.
I pulled the plunge and bought one for a reasonable price on ebay.
However the seller gave me the measurments (W:2,8 - 2,2inch; H:2,8inch).
I wasn`t very carefull so I did not ask the volume of it before buying.
It came Yesterday and the thing is TINY!
I measured and it holds barely 50ml of water (1,65 oz).
Is this normal? Should I try make gyokuro in it?

Yeah, that is realllly small, wow. I would brew a really concentrated version of gyokuro sometimes called "drop tea" because the tea barely drips out. You have to use a pretty good gyokuro or it will taste like s**t.

Say around 3 or more grams per ounce of water.

No reason not to use it, but you will want a bigger one for most times you make gyokuro.
