All of my favourite teas have a bit of an astringent or smokey bite...smoother teas I still enjoy but not nearly as often.

Chip, I do not know how this could work into a poll, but due the completely varied nature off the responses, I am wondering if people that prefer different types of teas tend to look for different flavors in their teas.

Like I feel if you are into Japanese greens, you really enjoy the Vegetal and Grassy flavors that can come from those teas.

Whereas if you got those in a Black tea it would probably be quite disgusting.

Just as you wouldn't expect to find Holiday Baking spices in Green tea's, but for Oolongs and Blacks they may be quite welcome.

When I need calming, I seek earthy toasty smooth roasted oolongs and puerhs and houjicha (drinking this last now); when I want to feel pampered, I'm more likely to look for sweet, floral, delicate white teas; and when I'm in a mood for something in between, I seek vegetal, sweet, bright greens.

I chose smoothness, boldness, grassiness, nuttiness, and "other"-- that "earthiness" that comes from really good pu-erh!

I agree completely. These are qualities I look for in my favorite kinds of tea-- green, Chinese black/red tea, and pu-erh. They kind of determine how much I like a given tea.

Started the day with some longjing, currently on a second steeping of pu-erh to keep me alert during a study session. :D Tonight is going to be interesting as I'm packing up my tea collection to send home for summer break, so I have to set aside enough tea to last me for a little over a week. (The box is going to reach my mother's house before I do, I think... Visiting my father in NYC for a couple days before heading up to her place.)

Interesting discussion as always! I will also have to consider the suggestion, thank you kindly. Suggestions for topic/polls are always appreciated.

TD teas today. Started with Asatsuya Organic Shincha from Yuuki-Cha. SweeTea was front and center for the shincha tasting while Koi and "Shincha" were visitors to the TeaTable.

Next up a tasting of Kagoshima Shincha from GreenTeaLovers.

From the options I put them in this order; sweetness, nuttiness, cocoa, floral and smoothness. Its so close between cocoa and floral but I think most days a nice cocoa flavored oolong would win.

2006 Guoyan Nannuo cake yesterday
