Forgive me if this has been asked before but...
I recently purchased some matcha tea, and would love to start exploring it, however, I'm unsure about the quantity to use per cup/serving. I saw on Uptons website that it says 2 1/2 grams per serving. I don't have a scale that measures that small, and I'm not about to buy one lol. Is there a teaspoon measurement that will yield roughly 2 1/2 g of the powder?
Thanks!
Re: Question about matcha quantity
Aah, this is a good question.
To make a good bowl of matcha, you want to use 1.875g of tea.
Did I scare you off?
Actually, the standard for preparing matcha is based off a Japanese unit of measure called a 'monme.' 1 monme is about 3.75g, or the weight of a 5-en coin. This is the amount of matcha used to make a serving of thick tea.
So, to make a bowl of light tea, you will want to use half that weight: 1.875g. Makes sense?
This is where the approximation 1-and-a-half scoops comes from, to estimate 2g.
But, to actually answer your question: you will want to play around with whatever spoon or measure you have to figure out how it corresponds to gram weight. Many companies give an estimate of about 2g to a tsp. So one teaspoon ought to be just right for a small cup of tea (about 5oz of water, not a full CUP of tea.

Re: Question about matcha quantity
If nothing else, you should have fun experimenting with different amounts! Everybody likes his or her tea at a different strength, so I think you will find that you can 'eyeball' the correct amount for you in a very short time!

Re: Question about matcha quantity
I love my scales (I keep one at home and one at the office), but I bring them out only in certain situations--when I am a little uncertain of the tea, in the first few brewings of a new-to-me tea, or to formally measure for tastings. I still mostly weigh my daily sencha, because I find that pretty hard to eyeball accurately.aya_s wrote:If nothing else, you should have fun experimenting with different amounts! Re: Question about matcha quantity
Thanks for the responses! I've been using just shy of a teaspoon, and that has takted pretty good so far. I think I'll stick with that.
Re: Question about matcha quantity
I've found that with different matchas I use different amounts. Yame matcha tends to be mellow where Uji tends to have more bite. However, I've found that higher grades in general can tolerate using larger amounts. I do typically have some Japanese sweets before I drink the matcha, which tends to mask any bitterness.
