Is there a Travel Kettle stainless and electric?

by Seeker » Aug 7th, '09, 18:33

Hello everyone,
I am wondering, has anyone heard of or seen or do you know of an electric kettle that is stainless steel and small(er) enough for travel?
I've had a plastic one in the past, but won't use plastic anymore since learning about the toxic substances that leach out of plastic at high temperatures (such as boiling, there are certainly much higher temperatures, but boiling is high enough to cause leaching).
Currently I use one of these:

I think a kettle would be nicer and more convenient.

Cheers!

I actually have one of those two; instead I use it to boil water for ramen back in my college days...I think that travel-sized and electric kettles might be contradictions, because if it's travel-sized, it's going to be small, but at the same time it has to hold enough water for a session of two, which would probably make it not travel-sized...

I think it really depends on how you define travel-size to be. These are some photos from http://www.pu-erh.net/, and his tea travel kit.

I really like this set-up. I think I'm contemplating putting together a travel briefcase like this someday. Check out this travel kit though, http://theteagallery.blogspot.com/. Granted, the kettles are exactly "travel-size," but I think if you're going to brew tea on the go, follow these examples

Wow, thanks Maitre!
What a cool travel setup. Have to consider the extra piece of baggage,
but for those us serious about tea - very nice.
I've been wondering about and very much considering those chinese kettles...

Not stainless steel, but the Bodum Mini-Ibis electric kettle might be just the ticket for travel. The tough polypropylene body would be sturdy for packing in luggage. Quickly heats 2-3 cups of liquid. My travel gaiwan kit fits perfectly inside it.

There are relatively few models of mini/travel electric kettles available.

Dualit makes a 1-liter stainless steel electric kettle, but I couldn't find locate an online dealer here in the US. Didn't try Canada, though.

Hi Intuit, and Thanks for your ideas!
I've already got a 1.2L plastic travel kettle, but I don't know what kind of plastic it is (there isn't a symbol anywhere on it!); it's by Toastess, and I've stopped using it as of about a year ago.
As with polypropylene, scientists have very recently discovered (by accident of course) 2 chemicals that readily leach out of it - quaternary ammonium biocides, and oleamide; it is not yet known how much or if these substances are toxic to humans.
So, I'm staying away from plastics as much as I can.
I'll see what I can discover about the dualit.
Cheers!

I read an article, wish I had kept it, that said actually most of the chemicals leech out early. So over a year old most of the bad stuff is gone, if it even is that bad, you know what I mean. So while I understand the concern, I wouldn't hesitate to use it for travel. Just a thought.

They have ceramic/porcelain electric kettles by chinese manufacturers that are beautifully designed but I don't know how to order one :( . I live in the US.

If anyone has ideas, please let me know.

You could also try getting a ceramic hot plate and a kettle separately. But I don't know how much more effective that would be than what you're already doing.
